A slice of my training as a Naval Officer occurred in 'simulators' - functionally early VR systems. How good were some of the simulators? In the navigation trainer in Victoria, when the simulator was shut down, sometimes it took a few minutes for trainees to reorient themselves to where they were and what was going to happen next. It was a powerful experience - especially if you messed up.

I am NOT saying that experience would make me run out and purchase a system for my home or office. What I am saying is that there is a time and a place for VR technology. If using the VR doesn't 'sell' you, then the vendors have not found the right experience, the right combination of VR hardware and experience.
