WD Raptor Hard Drive is in my machine
« on: June 10, 2003, 02:55:59 pm »
Well I just got the WD 10K rpm Raptor hard drive.  So far it seems fast, I haven't had time to play with it yet, but I'm itching to give it some tests.  At first I did want to get RAID up and running but I couldn't afford.  But then I saw the benchies of this drive.  :D

I suggest you go get HDTach 2.61.  I'm not sure of the url, but a quick Google Search should solve the problem.

No, I actually used to have RAID quite a while ago before I got my A7N8X.  I had the Asus A7V333 with RAID.  So I got used to some pretty fast speeds, then once I got my A7N8X I had to back down to a single drive.  So I've been trying to get faster disk performance ever since.  That is the biggest bottleneck with my system.  And I guess everybodies system  :) But just about everybody I know runs RAID.

ah, I'm running the A7V333 with raid board right now, and I was just sorta wondering what the performance difference would be if when I buy a new board, whether I should stick with good 'ole Raid, or whether to maybe go with a single raptor drive

If there wasn't much dif, then the single drive would probably be the way to go

Well I'm doing some benchmarks and some testing with games over the next couple of days so I'll let you know how she works out.  So far I'm liking it.  I was able to do one benchmark of Sandra and I got 37000 some odd points and the Sandra database said that an average RAID 0 with 7200 2mb cache drives got 36000 points.  So I mean it hovers right in there for performance on Sandra, but that is only one test and not always real world testing too.  I'll let you know how it performs though.

I'm running a pair of WD JB Series drives - 2x40GB RAID 0, and I score 44,000-47,000 in SiSoft.  Interesting, the more info you get on your drives, the faster SiSoft scores them. . .

yah its going to be a tough decision when I go hard drive hunting, on one hand, Raid is sweet, on the other hand only having one hard drive is nice(but serial ATA is just plain cool!)

Nice review, those benchmarks were really interesting, as I'm actually in the market for some new hard drives
