I'm not sure where I sit on this issue.  I've had the Cat 3.8's on my gaming system for a bit, and although I'm watercooled, I haven't noticed any temperature increases. . . if drivers can toast cards, and monitors, I haven't had any experience with that.  I have had a few bad cards down the pipe though.  With previous drivers, I've had a 9700Pro go funky on me, and a 9800 Pro buy the farm.

Maybe not using Catalyst 3.8's killed them.

I haven't even tried them, even if its just a degree of two increase, I can't do it

I just got my 9700np back from RMA, and the stupid thing overheats at stock speeds

The 9700 has a substandard hsf....the 9800 is only a little better. I recomend that you dump the stock cooling and mod up something different.

It sucks that you have to mod a video card just to run it at stock speeds

I agree....very poor design and one that I would hope you would not see on a companies flagship video card. Even just looking at the cooling "solution" you can see its a lame design more for show than real cooling...

1)Lame shim on the 9700 that prevents full GPU to HSF contact
2)Heatsink design that has no cooling fins directly over the hotest spot...the GPU
3)Wobbly mounting system
4)Lack of any heat control the the back side of the card (I think a lot of heat is there)
5)Lack of any heat control on the ram

I sorta think something is seriously wrong with this card that I got back on RMA though, first of all It absolutely frys, the entire card is absolutely cooking, and ever since the lan party (2 days after I got it back) it has been doing funny things during boot, its got all sorts of weird colors and artifacting going on, and now its doing it again, once you get into windows its really not noticable, but in games it has all sorts of artifacting

this really sucks cause I finally have a good video card, and so far it has been nothing but troubles

Maybe its Nvidia trying to get back at me for switching

It's not worth the hassle. You need a plastic cup tied to a stick.
I RMA'd my true ATI 9700 pro twice before they got it right.

Well I RMA'd my Saphire 9700, and ended up getting a true ATI 9700 Pro w/5 years warranty in exchange for it so thats finally all good after I have had to send back to cards already

and then while I was sleeping last night, I got woken up by a big bang, which ended up was my power supply blowing up, one of the capacitors exploded all over the place, but luckily the computer was off when it happend so it didn't wreck anything, so I had to RMA that too, so today was big day of replacing all the stuff that had died in my system, now hopefully I can go problem-free for at least a week or two

well the good thing about the 9700 though is ATI is great about warranty service, I had the old card couriered down to Ontario friday night, and it arrived wednesday morning (because of Remembrance Day holiday) and they air-mailed it back wednesday and it was on my doorstep thursday afternoon, that was quite the nice surprise because they said it could take up to 10 days to get me a new card
