Edifier @ CES 2013

One of our last stops at CES was at the Edifier booth.  This Chinese company makes some interesting products that offer really unique designs but still manage to pull off some pretty decent performance and quality.  Traditional speaker purists will tell you that the speaker cabinet must be made from wood and have a lot of specifications to enable good sound, but Edifier continues to break the mold and offer products with very unique designs that still sound rather nice.

One of the products of CES 2012 that we picked as our "Best of Show" was the Edifier Spinnaker speakers, and even though these are more than a year old, these speakers still catch your eye and your ear in terms of looks and performance.  The original red ones looked like the horns from some beast and they've expanded their lineup to include a lot more different colors.  These speakers are still some of my favorite products at the show again, and with the large color selection you can even snag a set that is a bit more muted if you don't want to scare away small children.

The other speakers that looked really interesting and sounded very good as well was the Eclipse.  These speakers have a very unique dual radiator design at the rear that helps project the sound to fill the room.  These really aren't that large, but even in a horrible venue like the LVCC, we noted that the sound was very good.  These speakers are quite directional as well and this will work great for PC speakers - and that's what Edifier has in mind.

Miiverse for PC and Smartphones

One thing that seems to be a somewhat decent feature with the WiiU is Miiverse. It is social network for the WiiU community, that will be expanding to smartphones and web-browsers soon. The release date is supposed to be sometime in April or May. It should be interesting to see if it will be a hit or just another attempt by Nintendo to do something out of the ordinary. Read more about it at the links provided below.

"Miiverse will be key part of the Wii U console and will be available at launch. The social network will connect players who have Mii profiles on the same system, and connect players from around the world via the Nintendo Network. Miiverse will be free to use for all Wii U players and won’t carry a price nor a subscription plan. Miiverse is based on web-browser technologies, which means it will be accessible from any browser enabled device in the world, including phones, tablets, and more.  To be a tad more specific, Miiverse producer Kiyoshi Mizuki stated that the app would be available in April or May, though a firm date has yet to be pinned down."

Genius EasyPen F610E Graphics Tablet

Tablet In A BoxWe have just posted our review of the Genius EasyPen F610E Graphics Tablet.  This tablet is a great tablet that has a bargain price tag and a whole lot of features.  Granted, Genius isn't as popular as Wacom, but the money you'll save is pretty awesome - and it works very well.  I've got a couple of small issues with it, but it's not a deal breaker.  Please check out our review for all the details.

The Genius EasyPeb F610E is a bargain at $99 and you can find it even cheaper than that online.  It seems to have good quality, excellent performance and an average software bundle.  When you combine this with a bargain price-tag, you have a winner.  While the Genius name may not inspire as much confidence as Wacom, we’ve had no issues with this tablet during our review and the support from Genius seems to be getting better and better here in North America.

Goodbye Lotus 1-2-3

IBM has announced that they are going to be retiring the Lotus brand and their famous product Lotus 1-2-3 (IBM acquired Lotus a few years back now). If you've been around personal computers since the beginning you will remember Lotus 1-2-3 and how it probably blew your mind when it was first released. Products like Excel has rendered Lotus 1-2-3 obsolete and it was just a matter of time until it was retired, but it had a good 30 year run. ZDNet has more on the legacy of Lotus 1-2-3.

This early spreadsheet turned the Apple II from a hobbyist toy to a business computer. VisiCalc came with room for improvement, though. In addition, a new architecture and operating system, the Intel-based IBM PC and MS-DOS, also needed a spreadsheet to be taken seriously. That spreadsheet, released in early 1983, would be Lotus 1-2-3, and it would change the world. It became the PC's killer app, and the world would never be the same.
