Edifier @ CES 2013

One of our last stops at CES was at the Edifier booth.  This Chinese company makes some interesting products that offer really unique designs but still manage to pull off some pretty decent performance and quality.  Traditional speaker purists will tell you that the speaker cabinet must be made from wood and have a lot of specifications to enable good sound, but Edifier continues to break the mold and offer products with very unique designs that still sound rather nice.

One of the products of CES 2012 that we picked as our "Best of Show" was the Edifier Spinnaker speakers, and even though these are more than a year old, these speakers still catch your eye and your ear in terms of looks and performance.  The original red ones looked like the horns from some beast and they've expanded their lineup to include a lot more different colors.  These speakers are still some of my favorite products at the show again, and with the large color selection you can even snag a set that is a bit more muted if you don't want to scare away small children.

The other speakers that looked really interesting and sounded very good as well was the Eclipse.  These speakers have a very unique dual radiator design at the rear that helps project the sound to fill the room.  These really aren't that large, but even in a horrible venue like the LVCC, we noted that the sound was very good.  These speakers are quite directional as well and this will work great for PC speakers - and that's what Edifier has in mind.

Nintendo's Next Gen to Use Free-Form Displays

Sharp has come up with some pretty cool technologies over the years and in fact the current 3DS uses a Sharp display to do the 3D magic. Well, Nintendo is a fan and Sharp's next awesome idea comes in many different shapes. "Free-Form" displays allow the panel to be cut to pretty much any shape to fit anywhere and will allow the next handheld device from Nintendo some freedom from the typical rectangle screen. It should be nifty. Stay tuned to E3 this year as it could be one of the highlights of the show.

Sharp's Free-Form Display technology is designed to allow for new shapes and sizes of screen, and the first client could be Nintendo. Japanese news agency Kyodo reports that the venerable video games company will be Sharp's first client for the LCD tech, which may be used in a new portable games console or the company's upcoming sleep-tracking device. According to one source, Nintendo is considering a doughnut-shaped screen with a hole in the middle.

Here comes Fancy Maker

Move over Samsung and Apple, a new smartphone competitor has entered the arena and they go by the name Fancy Maker.

Lenovo has announced a new subsidiary called Fancy Maker which will be an "online only" smartphone brand. Lenovo already is a big player in the international market and thanks to the addition of Motorola are now moving into the North America market as well, Chances are good that Fancy Maker will not be a global brand but we will see how it develops, maybe its a trend that will take off and we'll be waiting up all night to pre-order the Fancy Maker 6S+....

Phone arena has the story.

A few months back, Lenovo execs told The Wall Street Journal that they're planning on launching a new smartphone brand that would operate online-only. It was quite obvious that the new subsidiary, which is set to launch on April 1st 2015, is a direct answer to local superstar, Xiaomi, which popularized the model.
