As summer heats up, it is more important than ever to make sure your computer is cool. Laptops are also very critical to keep cool - perhaps more so than they used to be as notebook CPUs have increased in performance, power consumption and heat output. It is quite common to see a Core i7 CPU inside a laptop computer and if this machine is used as a workstation - it will get toasty warm. Today we are looking at a small portable laptop cooler from Evercool that promises good results with a very small footprint. Behold, the Evercool FIT Cooler.
The Evercool FIT comes in a nice retail package that shows the main cooler inside. At first glance it's not that impressive. It is quite a different design that normal and this makes me feel a bit uncomfortable with the product even before I get going. Traditional laptop coolers sit below the laptop and use a large fan to cool either the entire bottom of the laptop - or the general area where the heat is generated.
While this seems like a good idea, the reality is that the hot air inside the machine still has to be evacuated from the machine. Maybe you can cool off - or provide easier intake air - but the heat still sits inside and must be removed by the laptop's cooling fan. Evercool tackles heat in a different way with the NB-FT1. Their idea is to aid in the evacuation of the hot air. The FIT is designed to be placed in front of the main hot-air exhaust area on your laptop and assist in pulling the hot air out. This seems like a good idea, but it will be interesting to see how well it works and how practical it is in the "real world".
Bundle & Installation:
There really isn't a lot to the NB-FT1. It comes with a small pouch to hold the adapters, retractable USB power cable and the FIT itself. This fits nicely into the pouch and allows you to take it with you almost anywhere. To "install" the NB-FT1 - you simple unfold it from the shipping configuration, place the stand under the laptop and snug it next to an exhaust vent. Evercool has provided some rubber air ducts that help seal the intake end of the FIT onto the laptop so the FIT's fan can provide maximum assistance. For my Lenovo Thinkpad T410, I used the curved piece to seal it to the side exhaust area.
On the next page we'll take a look at the features and specifications of the NB-FT1 and find out how well it works.
