Introduction:

Today we are looking at the Linksys E4200 Dual-Band N Gigabit Router.  This is currently the flagship of the Linksys E-Series line as it combines all of the features and performance that most consumers could ever ask for in a router.  In many ways, this router is a basic follow up of the WRT610N router from Linksys that we looked at back in 2009.  Both of these units are Dual-Band N, but the big difference - other than appearance - is that the E4200 comes packing greater wireless speeds.  While the maximum theoretical performance of the draft-n WRT610N was 270Mbps, the E4200 is a final-N product and claims speeds up to 450Mbps.

Linksys is certainly no stranger to the network market and perhaps these last couple of years has been good to them and they have honed their products to provide closer to rated speeds.  When it comes down to testing, we'll make sure to find out how it performs over the wireless spectrum as well as over wired Gigabit connections as well.

Box

First Impressions:

Let's be honest.  There's not much you can do to make a router box appear fancy.   It's a piece of networking hardware after all.  Linksys has opted for the trendy professional look to the box and has put together a pretty nice package.  Other than the standard setup CD (actually handy, but don't tell your hardware enthusiast friends), power cable, network cable and quick install guide, there's really not that much to the package.

The overall appearance of the E4200 is pretty slick.  As you can see in the pictures below, Linksys is going for a minimalistic look here.  In fact, there aren't even any lights on the front of the unit showing cable connections, activity or anything.  The logo does in fact light up, but even than can be turned off if you use the setup CD.  The main activity and connection lights can also be turned off in the wizard if desired.

I was quite impressed with the overall appearance of the E4200.  Granted, looks are only about 5% of the story, but they've got a professional looking product that should appeal to most people.  If it looked tacky or super flashy, they'd lose a lot of interest from people, and they have certainly kept mind long enough to give it a go.
