ATP may not be the first name that crosses your mind when it comes to flash storage devices, but they've been at it a while and certainly have a wide range of products to choose from. Their USB Flash products come in sizes from 1GB to 8GB, and while they may not have the largest sizes available, they certainly do have some small, tough units. Today we are looking at the ATP ToughDrive Camo 4GB flash drive and put it through a few paces to see if it has the speed they claim and if in fact it is waterproof and tough. Keep on reading as we jump in and eventually get wet!
Established in 1991, ATP has over 17 years of experience in the design, manufacture, and support of high performance, highest quality DRAM modules and NAND flash storage products. ATP focuses in mission critical applications such as industrial/automation, telecom, medical, and enterprise computing where high levels of technical support/expertise, consistency of performance, and manufacturing quality are required. A certified Eco/Green partner of tier one OEMs, all ATP products are fully RoHS and China RoHS compliant.
A true manufacturer of both flash and DRAM products, ATP offers in-house design, testing, and product tuning at both the system and component levels. In addition, ATP supply chain support includes controlled/fixed BOMs and long term product life cycles.
ATP System-In-Package (SIP) flash product manufacturing process is the backbone to our superior build quality and durability. The industry leading SIP process involves advanced wire bonding, stacking, and encapsulation stages which make ATP products more consistently durable and reliable with waterproof, extreme temperature durability.
A technology driven company, ATP continues to expand its product portfolio with new unique products such as the GPS Photo Finder and micro-surveillance devices, enabling newer applications for flash storage. ATP also continues to develop storage based technologies such as its Smart ‘n Secure (SnS) technology, allowing for the secure distribution of content on flash memory devices.
There's not a lot to look at when it comes to a flash drive and this drive is no exception. This drive is middle-sized and comes in slightly smaller than the A-Data PD7 drive but much larger that the SuperTalent Pico drive. The casing of the drive is made from rubber and adds to the rugged appearance. The Camo theme is great for most people - unless your office is in the middle of a wooded area, then you may lose the drive in the brush.
The finish of the drive is certainly rugged in terms of protecting your data. I've dropped this several times, soaked it in a glass or water and even left it in my pockets through a wash and dry cycle. The drive still functions fine. The SIP idea is really what keeps this protected from water, but the rubber case doesn't hurt either.
On the next page we'll jump into testing and see if the ToughDrive is as fast as it is rubbery. . .
