Software Installation:

The Trendnet TV-IP512WN can be operated and setup through the web interface alone, or through the IPView Pro 2.0 software that comes bundled with the unit.  Both have their place, but if you have to monitor more than one camera, the IPView Pro software is the way to go.  We'll look at both options in this review.  First up is the included software.

Once installed, the software searches for connected cameras.  Once they are found you can input the username and password of each camera, add it to your monitored list and you are good to go.  It supports cameras in your local LAN as well as cameras that are connected to the internet at remote locations.  This is handy if you've got some port forwarding going on your home security system and want to monitor all of your cameras from a remote location.

The IPView Pro software allows you to setup motion detection areas, sensitivity levels and recording options as well.  These are pretty straight forward, and in a few clicks you'll be all ready to go.  Keep in mind that in order for this recording to work, the software must be running on a client machine.

The software has the ability to monitor a lot of cameras real-time, and you can choose how they are displayed in a grid.  For a single camera, the default view of the software looks like this...

Web Interface Setup:

The web interface can be accessed simply by opening a web browser and pointing to the IP address of the camera.  You will be required to login, and then have access to a simple setup wizard.  You can also set things up manually.  For the most part, the web interface is very similar to the IPView Pro setup, but the web allows you to do a few more things.

The web interface allows you to tweak the image brightness, contrast, saturation and a few other tweaks.  Motion detection and recording options set in the web interface are applied to the unit globally and you don't need any software running in order to capture video, images and send emails.  This is all built into the hardware itself.  One thing worth noting is that you'll have to be running Internet Explorer in order to set the motion detection and image settings.  IE uses ActiveX controls for this.  The video plays back fine in Chrome or Firefox, but you do lose some controls if you're not using an ActiveX enabled browser.  This is the first major flaw to the unit in my opinion.

Different recording profiles are available that range from decent quality 30fps 640x480 video to low quality 3GP for viewing on a cell phone.  You can choose which profile to use and have the recorded video sent to a file share, or an SD card located in the camera itself.  These recordings can be overwritten when the storage device gets full, or you can stop recording.  Another one of the handy things about the Trendnet TV-IP512WN is the capability to have it send an email with a photo when the motion detection is triggered - or at scheduled times if desired.  Make sure your outgoing mail server doesn't require SSL and you'll be all set.
