Introduction:

Solid State Drives have come a long way over the past few years and OCZ has actually been one of the companies that have driven the industry to be better, faster, larger and more affordable.  They don't settle for technology that has limitations and they try to find ways around, over or through limitations that are still plaguing this early stage of solid-state storage.  While you may argue that SSDs aren't all that new, the technology is changing so fast with new NAND flash chips and different controllers, algorithms for data correction and wear leveling that this whole industry is still relatively new and has a few growing pains.

Today we will be taking a look at one of the newer Vertex 3 SSDs from OCZ Technology.  We are looking at the 240GB version of the Vertex 3 SSD.  While this drive will still set you back about $350 currently, it is one of the highest performing 2.5" drives currently on the market today.  OCZ themselves have a Vertex 3 Max IOPS drive that is slightly faster.

The Vertex 3 is definitely worth considering when you choose your next high-performance SSD and today we're going to look at it and see how it stands up on our test bench.

Bundle & First Look:

As is pretty typical with SSD drives, there isn't a whole lot of extras in the package, but OCZ does include a bracket that enables you to install the drive in a 3.5" drive bay.  There are a lot of cases today that have places for 2.5" drives, but if you don't have a space for one, or they are already used, this bracket allows you to install it in a standard bay.  Other than that, the bundle is pretty flavor-less.  As is typical with OCZ drives, they throw in a sticker for you to put on your case, but the bundle is pretty lean.

The OCZ Vertex 3 isn't all that exciting on the outside of the unit.  I find it interesting that OCZ has a plastic case on this drive with a metal bottom - as opposed to their Vertex 2 that has an all-metal case.  The case can be dismantled by using a small Philips screwdriver, but in doing so you'll void your warranty.  If you want to see what is inside, please keep reading instead of voiding your own drive.

The Vertex 2 drive that OCZ released previously was all about SATA II (3.0Gbps), but the Vertex 3 makes the transition to SATA III (6.0Gbps).  Inside the case is the new SandForce SF-2281 controller and it fully supports the speeds that this drive claim.  We'll find out as we continue what more we can expect from this drive.  Before we get that far, we'll take a look at the features and specifications.
