|Testing and Benchmarks|
It's been a couple of months since we looked at an external HDD and the last one we looked at was the Silicon Power Diamond D03 1TB unit. It was a marked improvement over the Silicon Power Diamond D10 750GB drive that we'd looked at previously. We have a direct competitor to Silicon Power today - the ADATA DashDrive HV610 1TB. This is one of the USB 3.0 "entry-level" drives from ADATA and it promises high-end performance at an entry-level price. This drive can be found online for ~$90 and at that price, it's not the cheapest 1TB 2.5" drive on the market, but it is still a decent price.
We will find out today how it stacks up to the Silicon Power USB 3.0 drives we've recently reviewed and see how it holds up to it's own ratings. Let's start off with taking a closer look at the ADATA DashDrive HV610 1TB.
The drive is really quite a basic piece of hardware. ADATA has included a blue sleeve that helps hold the cable in place during transport. The HV610 is finished off in a puzzle-like plastic design that has glossy and matte spots. It's a decent finish, but it does feel a little on the "cheap" site. It feels like it will stand up to some abuse for sure, but it feels like a low-priced drive.
Obviously it wouldn't be BCCHardware if we didn't try and rip the covers off and void the warranty. We wanted to see what was inside this little drive. After opening the enclosure, we found that ADATA has opted for a Toshiba 1TB drive which isn't as popular of a choice as some other HDDs we've seen, but it seems more than adequate for this operation.
That covers the outside and inside of the ADATA HV610 1TB drive. On the next page we'll take a look at the specifications of this unit and the drive itself before we continue on to testing.
