Introduction:

Sometimes a product comes along that you never knew you needed. The Domotz software is pretty much just that. When I was originally approached to take a look at the software / hardware bundle, I was a bit confused as it was touted as being able to control your smart-home. There were a few other details included, but I assumed it was a smart-home hub. It is that - and a whole bunch more. What I'm going to briefly cover today is the more.

More is what the Domotz software gives you. It gives you the ability to see details of the devices on your network and also provides a one-click solution to administer those devices, access them remotely and control different aspects of those devices. It works for smart-home products as well as PCs, NAS, mobile, and pretty much anything that has a wireless or wired connection. The package we received included the software pre-installed on a Raspberry Pi 2, so all we had to do to get it running was plug in a power connector and Ethernet cable and we are good to go. The question is, where are we going?

First Look:

As I previously stated, I really didn't know what I was getting or getting into when I agreed to look at the Domotz. What I received was a nice and tidy Raspberry Pi 2 with a sticker on the top from Domotz branding it as their device. The interesting thing to note is that the software itself can be installed and ran from a PC, many NAS devices, or a Raspberry Pi device. Domotz is working on a new little unit that will be available in the near future. If you don't want to mess around with installing a software package - or perhaps you want a stand-alone unit, the cost of $69 for the Raspberry Pi right from Domotz is not too bad as it includes the Pi, a case, an 8GB MicroSD card preinstalled with the software and a simple guide to get you going. You get about $55 worth of hardware - and you don't have to do any work.

Installation & Usage:

It's s simple product that only takes moments to install on your network. If you choose the hardware version, as pictured above, you simply plug it in, install the application on your Android or Apple device, join the network the Domotz box is plugged into and search for it in the App. You will be required to setup an account and connect to the service and claim it on your account. Once you do that, the magic starts to happen.

Once the software and hardware are all working together, the Domotz agent discovers the devices on your network and will put them all in a list that you can sort out by importance, favorites, and add labels, icons, locations, names and more. This allows you to filter results and quickly find devices later if you are monitoring a large network.

In addition to sorting, labeling and viewing online or offline status of devices hooked to the network you are monitoring, you can also remotely run tests on network performance, bandwidth, and even trace and ping different servers - all while you are offsite.
