Here at BCCHardware we have seen a lot of different sound purveying devices and today we get another one from ROCCAT! The device we get to look at today is the Cross multi-platform gaming headset.
For those of you who aren't sure where ROCCAT is in the tech world; they are the makers of many different peripherals and accessories such as, mice, headsets, keyboards, mouse pads and other products relating to the gaming industry. ROCCAT tries to set themselves apart from the competition by only releasing top-quality products at different price points. The Cross we are looking at today, comes in as a cost-effective option that still promises good quality audio.
Upon initial inspection, we see that ROCCAT has kept to their usual standards in giving us some of the best packaging we can expect. It has very catching graphics of the Cross and the terrific usage of the many shades of blue that we have come to expect.
Once we crack the sucker open we find that they have put a nice clear plastic surround around the device, and behind that we find the installation document and a bubble bag containing the two audio cables for this headset - one 2.35m computer cable with boom mic that incorporates both the headphone and microphone jack - and the 1.2m mobile/console cord with inline mic. Both are easily attached and removed from the headset giving you excellent flexibility.
Once we remove the device from the plastic we can see that the whole design of the cross headset is superb! They have a nice sleek appearance with the ROCCAT name embedded on the top of the headband, which is adjustable and has some nice stitching on it to add a very refined and well made look. On the underside, it has a generously thick foam pad to make extended wearing of this headset very comfortable.
The ear cups are clearly labeled with an "R" and an "L" to distinguish how they are to be worn. On the left cup, we find ROCCAT engraved into it and on the right their signature logo. Also on the left cup we find a volume dial on the back and on the bottom the port for the removable cables. Both cups share the nice foam cushions and a slight tilt forward so they fit very comfortably on the ears.
After the two cables are removed from their bag we see that the computer cable has a nice braided cable with a boom mic and audio jack on one end and a mic and headphone jack on the other, while the mobile/console cable is much like an average auxiliary cable only with an inline mic and multimedia button close to the headset end. Another thing worth noting is that the mobile cable is not sheathed in nylon but simply the average plastic cable found on many peripherals.
On the next page, we'll look at the features and specifications before we jump into testing the Cross headset.
