iPhone 8 Benchmarks Faster than MacBook Pro

If you were looking for a reason NOT to buy a MacBook Pro, this could be it. According to the latest numbers coming from Geekbench, the iPhone 8 is much faster than a MacBook Pro when it comes to video editing. I always thought that MacBooks were tools for creative professionals, but apparently that's not the case. To be fair the Samsung S8 gets whipped as well. In the real world, this goes to show that benchmarks can be fudged and some devices are better tuned to specific tasks. Still, I'd feel pretty stupid if I had both a MacBook Pro and a iPhone 8 and my phone could whip my MacBook.

Geekbench comparisons between phones and laptops used to be pretty meaningless, as the tests were not directly comparable, but that hasn’t been the case for some time now. Founder John Poole confirmed that it is legitimate to directly compare scores across platforms, though he did add an important caveat.

Laptops are better at delivering sustained performance over a longer period of time, as opposed to the shorter max burst performance that benchmarks like Geekbench 4 are designed to measure. In other words, the iPhone 8 simply doesn’t have the thermals and heat dissipation necessary to replace your laptop.
