Performance Roundup

Testing Notes:

The Patriot Viper system in a dual-channel kit (2x8GB) while the other kits are all quad-channel kits (4x4GB). This doesn't make things very fair in certain benchmarks for the dual channel kit, but you'll see in other tests, the faster memory - even when running in dual-channel mode - is better. That should be true in most consumer systems today as most are dual-channel capable. Although our system is older, it's pretty solid overall.

  • Hexacore Intel Core i7-5820K
  • MSI X99 SLI Plus Mainboard
  • Quad-Channel Memory Capable
  • 2x Radeon RX480 GPU
  • Crucial MX100 512GB SSD

Performance Numbers:

SuperPi

  • 1st Place: Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • 2nd Place: Patriot Viper White LED
  • 3rd Place: Crucial Ballistix Sport
  • 4th Place: Mushkin Redline

Next up, Passmark's Memory Test.

Passmark

  • 1st Place: Patriot Viper White LED
  • 2nd Place: Mushkin Redline
  • 3rd Place: Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • 4th Place: Crucial Ballistix Sport

Moving on to AIDA64.

AIDA64

  • 1st Place: Mushkin Redline
  • 2nd Place: Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • 3rd Place: Crucial Ballistix Sport
  • 4th Place: Patriot Viper White LED

You can see in this test, that the numbers clearly favored the quad-channel kit. Still, for using half the channels, the Patriot kit keeps up very well.

SiSoft Mult-Threaded Aggregate Memory Bandwidth also favors extra channels of memory. For a dual-channel kit the Patriot Viper kit does really well.

  • 1st Place: Mushkin Redline
  • 2nd Place: Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • 3rd Place: Crucial Ballistix Sport
  • 4th Place: Patriot Viper White LED

The last benchmark shows actual file compression and decompression using the 7-Zip software. We tested using a single thread and the LZMA64 settings. The numbered results are the MIPS for both compression and decompression listed separately.

Decompression:

  • 1st Place: Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • 2nd Place: Crucial Ballistix Sport
  • 3rd Place: Patriot Viper White LED
  • 4th Place: Mushkin Redline

Compression:

  • 1st Place: Patriot Viper White LED
  • 2nd Place: Crucial Ballistix Elite
  • 2nd Place: Crucial Ballistix Sport
  • 4th Place: Mushkin Redline

The fact is that there is only a few percent difference between all of these kits and there isn't a bad one in the bunch. All performed exactly as they should at rated speeds. We didn't overclock them as this process is very system-to-system dependent and the actual performance gains are minimal when strictly overclocking your memory alone.

I'd like to thank all of the companies for sending out their memory for us to throw in the roundup. If you have any questions, comments or general feedback, please post it in the forum right here.
