Test Setup:

For this review we used our main Core 2 Duo test setup as is listed below.

Test Info:

We used a few synthetic benchmarks to see how this memory scales in theoretical performance.  When testing memory bandwidth, many factors come into play on a system and it is very hard to tell if the memory is actually providing additional performance or if the benefits from running memory faster are the direct result of a better CPU:Memory ratio, FSB or many other factors.  We used Everest Ultimate, FutureMark PCMark05 and SiSoft Sandra 2007 for our benchmarks.

 

Overclocking:

We ran our benchmarks at several different speeds based on some overclocking numbers we managed to get from this memory.  As you can see in the "SuperTalent - SPD" picture above (center), the memory has Serial Presence Detect (SPD) timings of 3-3-3-9 @ DDR2-400, 4-4-4-12 @ DDR2-533 and 5-5-5-15 @ DDR2-667.  This is so that the memory will post in systems that do not provide enough voltage to run the memory at DDR2-1000.  We set out to use the popular timings above and see how fast we could get the memory to run at each timing set.  We also posted up performance numbers at DDR2-800 and DDR2-1000.  The memory was able to run with tight timings of 3-3-3-8 up to 714Mhz, and 4-4-4-12 up to DDR2-890.  We were able to run the memory at its max rated speed of DDR2-1000, but we weren't able to take it much higher than that at all.  We topped out at DDR2-1014 on our test platform.  I'm not sure if this is entirely the fault of the memory however, as we were having some issues with memory dividers.  Regardless, the results are posted below:

Conclusion:

The Super Talent T1000UX2G5 kit performed very well for a CAS 5 DDR2-1000 kit.  It is a very nice 2GB in size and seems to be a very good upgrade choice for someone who wants some fast memory without forking over a mortgage payment to make it happen.  This memory can be ran at much tighter timings at very decent clock speeds if you are not interested in running at PC2-8000 right now, but want your options open for the future.  I expected much faster clock speeds out of the memory, but as I mentioned previously, it could very likely have more to do with a memory divider issue, rather than memory quality.

In the end, I could recommend this memory to anyone looking for a 2GB DDR2 kit, and with Vista gaining popularity; I know many of you will be looking for an upgrade.

 

Pros:

  • Fast kit gets the job done.
  • DDR2-1000 that scales with tighter timings as slower clock speeds.
  • Doesn't require 2.2v to operate at 1000Mhz.
  • Cheaper than many other 2GB DDR2-1000 kits.

 

Cons:

  • Doesn't clock up as well as I hoped.
  • Packaging very plain - may get overlooked on the store shelf.
