Introduction:

There are so many mouse pads on the market today that it becomes almost impossible to pick the "perfect" pad.  Some people prefer cloth pads, some prefer hard surfaced pads.  I've been using some very thin pads lately, and have grown to like the super low profile of the fUnc 1030 and SteelPad S&S.  The more I use these pads, the less I like the taller pads like the Everglide Giganta or the Ratpadz.  Today we are looking at a pad from SteelSeries that is a hybrid of the two.  They take a hard-finished cloth pad and stick it on top of a plastic pad.  This gives a little more height than a standard cloth pad.  It also provides greater stability to the pad as it won't roll up or catch on your sleeve and flip up the cloth edge.  The only downside (to me, at least) is that this pad is taller than the S&S and QcK.  We'll see how it shapes us as we go.

First Impressions:

The SteelSeries SteelPad 5L arrived on my doorstep about a week ago, and this is the largest Pad that I've used to date.  It measures 15" x 11" (38cm x 28cm) and is in fact only the third largest pad that SteelSeries makes.  Both the QcK+ and the QcK Heavy are larger.  For many people though, the size of the 5L is about right.  It fits comfortably on my desk, but if it were much larger would get in the way of other devices such as speakers, scanners, etc, that also share my desktop real-estate.

The SteelPad 5L comes with an abstract printed design that seems to work very well with any optical or laser mouse I tried.  The design is quite unique and brings to mind something Sci-Fi, like something out of the Matrix.  The package didn't include a carrying pouch or PadSurfers, as did the SteelPad S&S.  This pad comes straight up and is a good product all by itself.

About the 5 layers

The first layers consists of plastic coating on a cloth material, utilizing the strength and durability of plastic and the feel of quality cloth. The middle layer is composed of specially designed soft rubber foam to provide the feeling of softness. The bottom layers provide stability, as a highly durable plastic layer guarantees the shape of the pad, followed by small soft rubber elements offering complete non-slip steadiness.
