Unboxing & First Impressions:
A few weeks ago, Sonim sent me a press release regarding their "Xtreme Performance One" (XP1) phone that claims to be one of the toughest phones around. If you don't believe me, you can head on over to testanddestroy.com to check out the punishment that this phone can endure. At the time of this writing, their test phone has taken over 24,900 whacks with a large hammer.
The phone doesn't have a lot of new innovative features - at least in the world of the HTC Touch Diamond, iPhone 3G and such, but what it lacks in features in makes up for in endurance. The box arrived by Fedex and although things were shaken around a bit in the box, the phone should be able to withstand your favorite delivery service. If it can survive UPS, it's already considered a tough phone in my book. I've had a ton of hardware damaged by UPS and this phone arrived safe and sound.
This phone comes with enough hardware to keep you going. It comes with a USB Power Adapter, some information regarding phone usage and such, as well as a 1100mAh battery and a waterproof battery door. Also included in the bundle are replacement covers for the bottom ports and finally a nice belt clip. The phone is built using a rugged hardened rubber molding cast via dual injection and is rated to 1.65m drop to concrete and has vibration protection from 5Hz to 500Hz. While not waterproof, it can survive a stream of water at a 90 degree angle. It is dust and dirt resistant and can be operated anywhere from -20C to +60C.
