Introduction: 

A couple weeks back we took a look at the Thermaltake ISGC-300 CPU Cooler (full review over here), and today we are going to take a look at another cooler in this new ISGC lineup, the new ISGC-400 CPU Cooler. This new ISGC (Inspiration of Silent Gaming Cooling) line of products from Thermaltake is a little bit of a different approach when compared to their product lines in the past, but the ISGC-300 proved itself to be a very worthy competitor.

There are definite similarities between the ISGC-300 and the ISGC-400 coolers, and the finish and heatpipe cooler design is similar, but the ISGC-400 has a much lower profile (height) than the ISGC-300 that we took a look at. The ISGC-400 is going to be more aimed at the user that doesn't have a ton of space in their case, and will be aimed more at applications like HTPC's. Both the ISGC-300 and the ISGC-400 feature the same fan, the ISGC case fan (we reviewed the Thermaltake ISGC case fan over here). The ISGC case fan is an improvement over older fan designs, and offers user-adjustable fan control which helps you balance noise and performance depending on your application.

Let's take a closer look at the ISGC-400 CPU cooler....

 

First Impressions:

When it comes to low profile coolers, the ISGC-400 immediately looks like a contender when compared to some of the "cheaper" alternatives. Right away you can see and feel that the ISGC-400 is a pretty well constructed cooler, and has a pretty space-efficient design.

If you took a look at our review of the Thermaltake ISGC-300 cooler (Full Review Here), you'll notice that the general appearance of the ISGC-400 is somewhat similar. The ISGC-400 is significantly smaller than the bigger version ISGC-300, but then do have some pretty similar characteristics. The ISGC-400 is designed to fit into smaller spaces that other tower coolers can't, and the design allows it to sit over top of memory (check out the installation section of this review for more pictures of that).

Accessories (pictured below, right) are pretty standard (and exactly the same as the ISGC-300). You'll get everything you need for Intel (LGA775 and i7) and AMD installations. Everything else is pretty standard and nothing too out of the ordinary.

Thermaltake ISGC-400 CPU Cooler Testing and Installation:

Much like the installation of the ISGC-300, the ISGC-400 installation was easy and pain-free. For all applications you're going to have to remove the motherboard, however once you've got it removed from the case you'll be able to get the ISGC-400 installed properly in under 10 minutes.

As you cans see in the pictures above the ISGC-400 has a very space-efficient design and fits right over top of your memory and should allow you to get a pretty hefty system into a small case. In these pictures I have a Radeon HD-4870 installed and the cooler isn't much higher than the card and on a Mini-ATX board like the one pictured you can pack a high-end system into a small space.

 

Testing:

Test Setup:

We've recently re-designed our Cooler testing setup to show how new coolers are able to handle the new quad-core CPU's from both AMD and Intel, which produce more heat than traditional Dual and Single Core CPU's. We will be providing test results from both a Intel Quad Core processor (LGA775), as well as a AMD Phenom X4 CPU (AM2+) in all our reviews to give readers a better estimate of how this cooler will work on their CPU, as well as a better estimate of what the cooler being reviewed is capable of.

For Intel (LGA775) testing we will be using the Intel Quad Core Q9400 CPU, which produces 95 Watts of heat. This could be considered a mid-range processor, and while most Dual-Core processors produce ~50-80 Watts of heat, this should give you a pretty accurate estimate of what type of temperatures a cooler will provide you with. For AMD (AM2+) testing we will be using the AMD Phenom X4 Quad-Core 9950 CPU, which produces 140 Watts of heat and is currently one of the hottest running processors available. This processor should give us a very good estimate of how a cooler will perform with one of the hottest CPU's available. For both AMD and Intel testing, we have taken all temperatures using CoreTemp v.0.99.4. CoreTemp takes a temperature from the CPU core, and allows for much more uniform results across different motherboard and CPU platforms. These temperatures may seem higher than other temperature recordings; because chances are they are taking temperature recordings using the diode underneath the CPU, which isn't able to be as accurate, and can really fluctuate between different brands of motherboards.

For all tests we are using the Highspeed PC Top Deck Tech Station , and we are using no additional cooling in our testing. All temperatures are recorded in a controlled environment that is set to 23 degrees Celsius (73.4 Fahrenheit) to provide fair results between coolers.

For all tests we use Arctic Cooling MX-2 High-Performance Thermal Compound (Paste), We use the same thermal paste in all our testing so that we can keep our results consistent. If a cooler is shipped with thermal paste pre-applied, it will be removed and we will re-apply it with Arctic Cooling MX-2 to provide fair results.

In our Intel testing we found the ISGC-400 to do pretty well, especially when you consider the fact that it is more of a "low-profile" cooler. When compared to the ISGC-300 cooler from Thermaltake in which there are quite a few similarities (including the same fan), I found the performance to be quite similar and it was actually closer to the ISGC-300 than I was expecting.

Overall I was pretty impressed with the performance of the ISGC-400 in our Intel Quad-Core testing even though the performance didn't set any records it was more than able to keep up which is pretty impressive for a cooler with a lower profile than most of the other coolers we were comparing it against.

Let's see how the ISGC-400 did against our AMD Quad-Core.

The results are in and as you can see in the chart above the ISGC-400 was able to handle the 140 Watt AMD CPU without any problems. The final results weren't groundbreaking; however it wasn't too far off from most of the other coolers we tested it against. While the drop in temperature when compared to stock cooling wasn't huge, the biggest thing to note is that while reducing stock cooling temperatures the ISGC-400 also reduces noise significantly and may be able to fit into places where other coolers can't.

Overall in both the AMD and Intel testing I was very pleased, and when considering how much lower of a profile the ISGC-400 is, I'd say the results were very favorable and make a strong case for this cooler.

 


 

Thermaltake ISGC-400 CPU Cooler Final Thoughts:

This is the second cooler I've been able to take a look at in Thermaltake's new ISGC line of products (review of the ISGC-300 CPU Cooler here), and so far it seems like this line of coolers and products is a winner. I was almost a little skeptical of the ISGC-400 due to its lower profile (smaller size), and I expected performance to suffer because of it but I was wrong about that. The performance of the ISGC-300 surprised me, and it proved itself to be a very worth competitor and for a lower profile cooler it did very well in our testing. The ISGC-400 didn't set any records for performance; however it also didn't have a problem keeping up with most of the much larger coolers that I compared it against.

Sometimes low profile coolers can be a little on the cheap and flimsy side, but the ISGC-300 is quite the opposite. Thanks to the high quality construction of this cooler, the ISGC-400 is very sturdy and you're not going to feel like you're going to snap it in half while installing it. While the ISGC-400 might not be a slim as some of the other low profile coolers we've review in the past, it still has a much lower profile (height) than most of the heatpipe coolers available on the market today, and that makes it a great choice for anyone who doesn't have a ton of space in their case yet still wants a good cooler.

I really don't have any issues to tell you about with the ISGC-400, it's a nice cooler that gets the job done. The performance might be the only issue that some people might wonder about, but if you have the room in your case for a bigger tower cooler (ex: Thermaltake ISGC-300, Zalman 9900 LED, etc) you'll probably end up going with a different (and bigger) cooler, but if space is an issue the ISGC-400 might just be the perfect solution.

At the end of the day I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the Thermaltake ISGC-400 cooler. Thanks to its high quality design and great performance it has proven itself to be a very worthy cooler, and we've award it our "Editor's Choice" award. If you need cooler than doesn't take up a lot of space, yet still performs like a champ, you're going to want to check out the Thermaltake ISGC-400 CPU Cooler.
