Introduction:

Widescreen LCD's are becoming more and more popular, and also are becoming bigger and cheaper, which is really a consumers dream come true. Only a couple years ago you would have been hard pressed to find a LCD monitor for less than 500 bucks, now you can buy a 20 inch widescreen for under 300 dollars.

I'm finding LCD reviews tougher and tougher to do, seeing as LCD technology has come so far in the past few years. I remember not that many years ago buying my first LCD with a blazing fast 16ms refresh rate, now a monitor like that would be considered low-end and you'd probably have a tough time finding on with such a slow refresh rate anymore.

Today we are going to look at the 20 inch widescreen from Viewsonic, which features a 1680x1050 resolution. This monitor is definitely very competitively priced at 299.99 CDN, let's see how it performs.

First Look:

The box that this LCD came in is pretty much like exactly like every box that I've ever seen, nothing too special, but enough padding to protect it from the mailman. The entire monitor with base weighs in at 18.9 pounds.

The VX2035wm comes with an included DVI cable, as well as a VGA cable, power cable, and your normal quick start guide and installation software CD. Nothing in the included package is too out of the ordinary, but you've got everything you'll need to get up and going.

Closer Look:

At closer inspection, you'll see that this is a pretty classy looking LCD; it's got the nice Silver/Black color combination. The menu buttons are pretty standard, they blend in nicely, and this model features built-in speakers. These speakers aren't going to impress you in means of quality, but they definitely do the job, and for somewhere like an office environment where you don't need much volume they are absolutely perfect.

As you can see from the pictures below, the inputs are pretty standard.

The buttons (pictured below) are also pretty straight forward, nothing too special with them; they blend in nicely and don't stick out like a sore thumb. My only complaint is they can sometimes be a little tough to push; this really isn't a big issue since you don't use them much.

Peformance

The performance testing of an LCD is becoming harder and harder to do. In the past year or two LCD's have reached the point where pretty much every brand on the market has a low enough refresh rate that you're not going to notice ghosting like early LCD's had, which was easily the biggest complaint that most people had about LCD's.

Performance - Text:

Viewsonic's company motto is "The Choice of Professionals", and the majority of professionals are going to be using this monitor mainly for text-based applications, so you'd expect the text performance of this monitor to be top notch. Well, if you were expecting that, you will not be disappointed.

Even on a 20 inch widescreen, the text quality is very nice, and everything looks nice and crisp. I really have no complaints when it comes to text quality, and this monitor would definitely be a great choice for business applications.

Performance - Video:

I threw on a couple videos to see how this model could handle it, and just as I suspected, it handled it admirably. Even with the fastest action movie, I was not able to detect any ghosting. The picture quality is also very nice, I have no complaints whatsoever.

Performance - Gaming:

Gaming is definitely one of the best ways to test a nice big display like this one, and we had a brand new 8800GTX to push this screen to the max. The first thing I tried on this monitor was gaming at our LANtabulous lan party, and quite frankly I was very happy with it. No ghosting was noticed, and with a video card like the 8800GTX providing high-quality images for it, it was a killer combination, and definitely had people stopping to see. Games like BF2142 really look nice on this monitor.

At the end of the day I had no complaints whatsoever with the gaming performance of this monitor.

Conclusion:

The Viewsonic VX2035wm is one nice monitor, and I'd have no problem whatsoever putting this on my desk for everyday use. It's got a great refresh rate (5 ms), and being a 20 inch widescreen, you've definitely got plenty of desktop area in windows, also this LCD is nice and bright, so no complaints in that department either. The most amazing thing is that this monitor is under $300.00 dollars CDN, which is amazing for what you get, and worth every penny.

The only things I can even point out as being minor flaws are the fact that this model does not feature a height-adjustable stand. Viewsonic has other models that do feature height-adjustable stands so if you'd like to have that feature you can move to another model. The only other complaint I had was that the buttons on the front of the monitor are a little tough to push, please realize that I'm being pretty picky in mentioning that, and it really says something about a monitor when that's the biggest flaw I can find.

At the end of the day, I can easily recommend this monitor, and can easily give this our "Top Pick" award, if you need a new LCD, you can't go wrong with this one, Viewsonic has hit yet another home run with the VX2035wm.

Pros:

  • Fast 5ms response time
  • 20" 16:10 LCD @ 1680x1050
  • DVI & Analog Inputs
  • Great Value (~$300.00 CDN)

Cons:

  • The menu button are sometimes a little hard to push
  • Would be nice if the stand was height adjustable
