General Hardware / Re: How slow is my hardware?
« on: September 10, 2017, 06:53:36 PM »
It was finally time to upgrade my 8+ year old hardware for something new.

To keep the spec's the same I used the original y-cruncher version which is definitely not optimized for my new hardware.

y-cruncher v0.6.5.9444b (fix 2)
Single Threaded:
Computation Time: 497
Total Time:  521

Multithreaded:
Computation Time: 44
Total Time:  52

Not that impressive really.  Upgraded the benchmark to build v0.7.3.9474 which is definitely more aware of my new hardware!

Single Threaded:
Computation Time: 300
Total Time:  311

Multithreaded:
Computation Time: 24.39
Total Time:  28.85

Much more gooder.

General Hardware / How slow is my hardware?
« on: February 25, 2015, 08:06:58 AM »
Good day everyone!

I know my hardware is about 6 years old and a few generations behind what's current.  I'm interested to know just how slow my hardware is in comparison to the newer gear available.  I'm looking to upgrade this year sometime, maybe when the new Intel Skylake comes out.

To benchmark I've been using y-cruncher.  It can be had here: http://www.numberworld.org/y-cruncher/

I've performed a single thread and multi thread calculation to 500,000,000 decimals of pi.  Here are the results:

Single Thread:
Computation Time: 701.601
Total Time: 724.647

Multi Thread (8):
Computation Time: 173.796
Total Time: 183.988

CPU: Core i7-930 @ 4.01 Ghz
Memory: 24 GB @ 762 MHZ (1524)

I'd appreciate your system specs and performance for the same test to quantify how fast my computer isn't.

Thanks!

General Hardware / Lenovo Laptop DC Power Connector

Fujitsu,

Hi.  My wife has an ideapad y560p laptop and it will no longer charge.  The charger is good with 19.7v at the tip.  I don't know if it's designed to run without the battery but plugged in, but it won't do that either (to rule out a defective battery).  It's been finnicky for a while as in to get it to charge you had to position the charger tip perfectly in the connector but it finally gave out tonight.  I'm guessing the connector jack inside the laptop needs to be replaced/resoldered.  Do you have any advice?  Maybe some instructions *wink* *wink*??

I have a X-Fi Fatal1ty with the 5 -1/4" drive bay and remote control I'll sell ya.
It's the older PCI slot type card which is notorious for sounding like rice crispies (crap drivers), especially in an SLI or high bus traffic application.  Horrible.
I permanently solved the problem by upgrading to an ASUS Xonar DX 7.1 and never looked back.  Sounds better IMO.  Decent price too.

FWIW

That's how many points I have now.  See?  I guess you can't see.  The 'attachments upload' folder is broken.  But I'm still gunna brag about it.

LAN & General Gaming / PC Game Prices
« on: December 16, 2010, 07:37:56 AM »
Is it just me or are PC games too expensive?  (Or maybe I'm getting cheap as I age)

Long long ago, in the before time, games used to cost $30-$40 with premium titles being $50.  Now the trend appears to be $40-$50 with premium games being $60.  I can't justify $60 for a game.  Obviously this is working for publishers given record sales of the modern warfare series and starcraft 2.  Modern Warfare 2 is over a year old and still retails for $60.  In fact it's on the bargain shelf at Walmart with its original $60 price tag.

On the flip side I find myself buying cheap bundles on Steam for my entertainment.  I bought the orange box and world of goo a few weeks ago for $10.  $10!!  That's value for ya...  Ok, I think I'm done ranting now.

I logged on to battle.net to see if starcraft 2 was any cheaper digitally and this is what I got... (see attachment)

Notes from the Shows / Re: Would You Use eBooks That Are Ad-Supported?
« on: December 16, 2010, 07:27:15 AM »
Initially I would say no, but it depends how it's implemented.  For example if you had to watch an ad before you started reading anything and weren't bothered until the next time you opened the book then it might be ok.

Chances are the ads would be strategically placed as to interrupt and destroy the climax of the story to force you through the ad because you want to see what's next.  It's all about anticipation.  For that reason, I'd say no.
