LAN & General Gaming / Re: Gears of War runs terrible
« on: February 26, 2008, 10:06:36 PM »

I ran it at medium/high to start with and it sucked.  I have it at medium/low now and it still stutters.  It seems to happen most when when the game has to load new enemies.  It sometimes hangs for 3 or 4 seconds between changes in the action.

The thing I don't get is that Crysis has way more field of view and looks better than GoW, which is all urban terrain.  I am running at 1920 x 1200 by the way.

Any word on Lantabulous '08.  I am getting married on March 8th, so I hope it isn't that weekend.  My fiance might be a little annoyed if I had to postpone the wedding ;)

Also, any chance there will be a Halo server?

I remember having this problem once. I really couldn't remember where I found the fix, but finally here it is:

Good luck!

I found that as well but it didn't help.

Thanks, I figured that might be the case.  Next time I will research a product more.  It was kind of an impulse buy.  All I wanted was something that would convert WMA's to mp3's.  I should probably do a proper windows install sometime anyways.  I was hoping I could wait for Vista but that might be a long time.

I tried that and it didn't do anything.  The icon in My Computer says CD-RW drive but I can't write anything on it.

I bought Magix's MP 3 Maker 12 deluxe, installed it, didn't like it and unistalled it and now Windows won't recognize either the dvd-rw or the cd-rw drives for burning.  I can still use them as rom drives.  I tried uninstalling them and reinstalling them and it didn't do any good.  One odd ting is that McAfee was able to archive on the dvd-rw drive but windows won't recognize them.  Does anyone have any tips?

I tried running the 2142 unlock mod in single player and none of the unlocks were selectable in the cusomize window.  Anyone have any tips?

General Mayhem / Re: PC Pre/Pro
« on: January 07, 2007, 04:55:31 PM »
A pre/pro is basically an A/V receiver without the amp part.  A pre/pro processes video and sends it to your tv/monitor as well as processes audio data and sends the analog signals to your amp.  When companies make A/V receivers they usually make them for the mass market so they don't always use the best processors to save money, where as pre/pros are made for the mid to high end user and usually are better at processing.  Example: I bought a Yamaha RX-V2600 A/V receiver last year.  It is supposed to up-convert 480i/p signal from a DVD player, SD satellite receiver, VCR, etc.  to 1080i and send it out HDMI to a compattable TV.  But it has difficulties turning analog signals into digital signals and therefor my screen goes blank for a few seconds at random intervals.  If it had a better video processor it this wouldn't happen.

So I was thinking, I spent all this money on a fast computer why can't it process video signals.  The only problem i can see is how to deal with all the inputs.  So, i was wondering if anyone on this forum had any ideas.

I have been looking into pre/pro's lately, and I started wondering if you could convert a PC into a pre/pro.  If anyone has any suggestions or has heard of anyone doing this, let me know.

Operating Systems & Software / windows problems

Have any of you had any experience with the taskbar becoming unresponsive when restarting or shutting down.  Whenever I shut down or try to restart, it seems like every item on the taskbar freezes and windows can't close them.  Also has any one had any problems with the creative X-FI software not running when you click on them.

News / Re: Logitech's MX1000 Laser Mouse Review

This thread is a little old but I am new and I thought I would offer my comments.  I bought an MX1000 over a year ago and as soon as I took it out of the box I didn't like it.  My thumb wouldn't fit in the thumb contour.  I do have a pretty big thumb though.  I also liked the button layout of my MX510 better.  I have had my 510 for quite a while now and I don't know if I could get used to a different one.  Cordless would be nice though.

I was on the nVidia website and they had tips for reinstalling drivers that said to disable any virus protection when istalling drivers.  I did that and reinstalled my X-FI drivers, and everything seems to be working.  As far as the sound card anyways.  I still can't get 5.1 signals from the card though but I am getting stereo PCM from it.
