General Hardware / [Frontpage News]Asus Eee PC
« on: November 03, 2007, 02:59:03 PM »
So far two of these have been returned to the MemX location in Edmonton. The complaints were regarding dead pixels in the LCD and stability of the Linux distribution on the Eee PC. Though this unit is only $400 to $500, some people don't realize that this is not a W7, but an expensive "toy".

I know that a Windows O/S will work on this device, but finding adequate solid-state storage comes at a premium.

LAN & General Gaming / Fragapalooza Thread
« on: March 25, 2007, 01:07:53 PM »
OK, it's that time of year again where people start planning to register for Fragapalooza. Registration takes place 5 hours from now, so if anyone is interested, they can head over to and register.

The first 200 people to be registered will be entered into a draw for an Nvidia video card.  The first 400 registered will be entered into a draw to win an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

The cost for registration is now $90 and covers all 4 days of the event.

If you have any questions in regards to the event, they can be answered in the Fragapalooza forums or on IRC. For IRC, connect to using any IRC client, then join #fragapalooza.

General Hardware / [Frontpage News]HIS X1650 IceQ Turbo
« on: January 23, 2007, 03:35:52 PM »
The return rate on these video cards has been high, but naturally there are things that people have to consider:

1. They do not work in a 4X AGP motherboard (AGP version of the X1650). No POST is the common symptom for that issue.
2. Power requirements are a bit extreme at 350W or higher, especially for a mid-range card. A clean power source is required meaning that one cannot splice a connection from their hard drive or fans to power the card.

General Hardware / [Frontpage News]Sound Blaster X-Fi Issues Explored
« on: December 29, 2006, 09:42:58 PM »
Since the problems of the X-Fi came to light, I have been re-thinking my purchase of a new sound card. The Auzentech products have really impressed me so far, and they have more features compared to what the X-Fi comes with.

Some of those features are: DTS Connect, DPL (Dolby ProLogic II), optical inputs and outputs, and upgradable ODAmps. Yeah, it may not have hardware EAX 5.0, but I think that technology is going the way of the do-do bird.

General Hardware / Broke 3.4 with the E6300

Well, looks like I called bluff on some kiddies at XtremeSystems. They were mentioning how the Gigabyte 965P-DS3 had a problem overclocking past 470 MHz with Micron memory, which has now been fixed in the F7 BIOS.

Here is the link with my screenshot:

Suggestions, Feedback & Bugs / Suggestion: Alpha-numeric registration code
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:07:31 PM »
In order to prevent spambots from registering on this forum due to open exploits in PHP, would it be possible to install an alpha-numeric registration code?

Spambots can't get past the registration unless the code is entered manually. When I had some PHP portals/forums running, I had to install it.

General Hardware / Warning on the P5N32-SLI Premium!
« on: November 13, 2006, 07:59:14 PM »
It appears that Asus has experienced an engineering problem with this motherboard. It turns out that the memory controller in the nForce590 is not functioning correctly. If RAM modules are placed into DIMM 1 or DIMM 2, the motherboard will not POST. If modules are placed into DIMM 3 or DIMM 4, the motherboard does POST.

Asus has instructed vendors to return the motherboards back to either their suppliers or Asus themselves. If you are an owner of one of these motherboards, contact the vendor that you purchased the motherboard from.

The nForce590 itself does not have a memory controller bug, Asus poorly engineered their motherboard around the nForce590.

Tsk tsk Microsoft, you need Razor to make a better mouse for you? I'd rather have the regular diamondback without the MS logo.  ::)

Operating Systems & Software / [Frontpage News]Windows Vista RTM Today?
« on: November 08, 2006, 08:40:36 AM »
It looks like Windows Vista is finally being released to manufacturer (RTM).  This has been anticipated and expected for a long time.  RTM means that the OS is done and it is being shipped to packaging aand System Builders.  We will still likely have to wait until January to purchase a copy, but if you are a MSDN or TechNet subscriber you should be able to download the official release later today.

Does anyone want to wait till Service Pack 1?  :funny

Though I am an ATi fan, I will admit that their driver support has gone downhill since the X1950's came out. The stock 6.10 Catalysts' don't even support that series of card! You have to get some "modified" driver off of ATi's website and force the installation of the driver through the device manager. This is not considered to be a professional product by any-means and is making me shift over to Nvidia a lot faster than I expected.  >:(

General Hardware / A8R32-MVP 0602 BIOS Released
« on: September 17, 2006, 08:07:01 PM »
Hopefully this will fix some issues with this board. 0302, 0404, and 0502 had nothing but issues. I'm hoping 0602 fixes the memory problem with 4 sticks of memory running at 100 MHz.

* This is a BETA BIOS! Use at your own risk!*

General Mayhem / Hello, Bonjour, Salut
« on: September 09, 2006, 11:52:00 AM »
Hello all.

I just recently stumbled upon these forums and figured I might as well join.  :) I also wanted to let you know that I am a Memory Express employee that is in charge of all the RMA testing for the Edmonton location. If you have any questions about what hardware appears to fail most,  :P, don't hesitate to ask.

Lobbdogg probably knows who I am.  ;D
