Operating Systems & Software / [Frontpage News]Windows Vista: Six Not Eight
« on: February 28, 2006, 05:04:06 PM »

Microsoft confirmed on Sunday the upcoming versions of Windows Vista.  It will be released in six versions as opposed to earlier reports of 8 or more versions.  Six versions still seems like a lot, but not so much when you consider the four current versions of Windows XP.  Take a look at the press release over at Microsoft here. . .

I count more than four...
Windows XP Home Retail
Windows XP Home Retail SP1
Windows XP Home Retail SP2
Windows XP Home OEM
Windows XP Home OEM SP1
Windows XP Home OEM SP2
Windows XP Professional Retail
Windows XP Professional Retail SP1
Windows XP Professional Retail SP2
Windows XP Professional OEM
Windows XP Professional OEM SP1
Windows XP Professional OEM SP2
Windows XP Professional x64
Windows XP Media Center
Did they make a retail x64 and Media Center?
And what about the Dell and HP versions?

General Hardware / [Frontpage News]Logitech`s G5 Mouse

Yes I know that the G5 mouse has been out for a while, but I bet you still don't have one. This is a subject that is very near and dear to my heart as I have been using a Logitech 518 for a while now with varied success.  By varied I mean frustrating.  It keeps changing dpi settings on its own as though it had borrowed its will from the underworld.  I finally had to set it to the highest dpi and then adjust in the game.  However they probably fixed that in the G5 and it has a. . .

Got one. It does help alot. I play at about 1200 DPI. 2000 DPI skipped too much for my mouse sensitivity level. I have no idea how I like the weights in the mouse. I keep changing them around like I do with my under garments.

Operating Systems & Software / [Frontpage News]Vista Wants ECC RAM?

Here's an interesting bit of tech news that I stumbled upon.  It appears that Microsoft is going to be pushing the use of ECC (error correction and checking) memory on all Vista based computers.  While this would appear to be a good thing on the surface there are several factors that will hamper this move.  First off ECC memory is a good deal more expensive and secondly it is slightly slower due to the error checking circuitry.  Time will only tell if this is a good move or. . .

Good. Anything that makes windows more stable, should be used. Of course windows could just make their program detect bad memory instead, and save everyone hardache and money.

P.S. Memtest86+ is free to use. And it works.

General Hardware / [Frontpage News]Everybody Get Func

Tech-Mods has a look at a rather large Func gaming surface.  For those of you not familiar with Func, they are a company that makes some of the best mouse pads in the world.  They make some pretty cool gear and the sUrface 1030 Archetype Competition surface on the bench today is no exception.  Take a look and see what they think of it.

[div style=margin-l. . .

I used a func surface when I smacked down Nicao at the last Unreal lanparty. I went back to my old mousing surface after the lanparty because the surface made me too good, and we don't want that.

LAN & General Gaming / From the inside of Fragapalooza
« on: July 22, 2005, 10:41:51 PM »
As we start our all nighter of playing who knows what games, I wonder just how many Terrabytes of network traffic will be used. If it wasn't for the occasional power outage, a number of us would have forgoten to eat today. VulcLan is still in the winners brackets for the Unreal Tournament 2004 4vs4 Team Death Match at www.fragapalooza.com. The team consists of Nicao, Terror, MissileMan, and I (BoneRak). We are about to get handed a big piece of humble pie tomorrow as we face our first semi pro team. Wish us luck that the power does not go down during the match.

Here's something that could tickly your fancy if you are into strange computer accessories.  It appears that some people have found a way to package a Swiss army knife and a usb stick together.  Not only can you use the handy tools for surviving in the wilderness but you can also store instructions for surviving in the wilderness on the usb stick.  Now only if it had an lcd screen to read the stick. Take a look at what

The first thing I thought was that is silly. Then I reallized I have all those items in my pocket seperately.. It "IS"  "everything a techy needs"
Do you think I could go to my local knife store in the mall and pick one of these up?

LAN & General Gaming / Gaming Rig Stolen..
« on: December 05, 2004, 01:22:36 AM »
Not the best Sunday morning surprise. It hasn't even been a full year since my first break and enter at my computer shop. This time it was a little more personal. They took my gaming rig!
System Specs: AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 1GB Corsair RAM, SATA Hard drive, Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. I don't think I will be able to make any of the Desert Combat matches for the remainder of the year.
Well at least I have my health (cough) (cough).

You might think I'm just about ready to start griping on UT2k4, well that's not the case. Long story short, I was born left handed.. Anyone have links to flash games on the net to help improve my mouse clicking.  I found one in the old new section on BCC. http://www.richsalter.btinternet.co.uk/cks1/index.html but I could use a few more.

Not the best way to bring in a new year. The front door of my shop was smashed in last night and one computer (XP3000+) and a few monitors were stolen.
I count my blessings my server was still there and my gaming rig!

LAN & General Gaming / Lan Party for Dec Recap
« on: December 21, 2003, 04:44:13 PM »
Well it was the first Arrowwood lan party in the Arrowwood Hall on December 20 2003. The games being played were Unreal Tounamanet 2003 and Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat Mod.
The total attendies I believe was 10 people. Two shy a full 6vs6 Desert Combat game, but fun still the same. As usual there was a little hitch with networking but the servers ran flawless thanks to Nicao and Seeker for putting in the hard work in admining. HowdyDudy did a bang up job of hosting the event. He helped everyone get connected to the game and took care of odering the pizza. For that we let him get high score a few times  ;D . A few familiar faces were missed from this event, I hope everyone that missed it can have the chance to make it next time.

For the Lanparty on the 20th of December in Arrowwood at the Arrowwood hall. I would really like a map on how to get there.

Is it South of Lethbridge or what? And should I bring my bathing suit?

General Hardware / CD Library
« on: November 26, 2003, 02:02:32 PM »
I am trying to find a program that reads ISO's as a CD Drive. I know they are out there, I just don't know what the name of a newer one is that works with windows XP. It would be nice not to have to keep the Battlefield 1942 CD in the drive everytime it was needed to start the game. Help me out here Fujitsu.
