General Hardware / AMD Shows off Ryzen 2nd Gen

AMD has been on a roll and if you've been keeping up with Computex news, they've helped Intel look really, really bad. AMD announced their Ryzen 2 line and showed off plenty of working Threadripper 2nd Gen systems running an incredible 32-core processor (64-threads). 

    

After the announcement, Intel quickly showed off some 28-core madness, that was cooled by industrial cooling systems. After people started laughing at them, they pulled all of the systems as clearly they just were trying to keep up with AMD and show they had something nifty as well (Spoiler: They don't). The 32-Core Threadripper is cooled by air - although it is a beefy cooler.

Operating Systems & Software / Yahoo Messenger Gets Axed on July 17

AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) was discontinued last October by Yahoo (Oath) and now Yahoo is killing its own messenging platform. Yahoo Messenger has been around for years, but they can't compete with Facebook, WhatsApp, Snapchat and others. The thing is, Yahoo is directing people to another messenger app they started testing a while ago called Squirrel. It's beta and invite only, but you can request access here. I have no idea why they'd kill one to start another. It makes as much sense as Google having three messaging apps for Android. None.

   “There currently isn’t a replacement product available for Yahoo Messenger,” the company writes. “We’re constantly experimenting with new services and apps, one of which is an invite-only group messaging app called Yahoo Squirrel (currently in beta).” Squirrel is a group messaging app Yahoo started testing last month.Source: TechCrunch

General Hardware / Snapdragon 850 is Qualcomms's PC Chip

Qualcomm has been doing a lot of awesome things over the past few years in terms of chip designs. They have built most of the smartphone processors as well as a ton of IoT chips, VR Headsets and a bunch of wearable processors as well. They really have a solid product line with their Snapdragon processors and they are in virtually all flagship devices. They've just stepped up their game again and released the Snapdragon 850 - a chip that is designed entirely for Windows PCs that support ARM. The beauty of this chip is that it is clocked in a 2.96GHz and the chip includes a camera processor that captures 4K and HDR. In addition to those nifty tidbits, it also includes Qualcomms X20 LTE modem that enables 1.2Gbps transfer speeds, and up to 25 hours of battery life on a thin-and-light PC. Zing!

   So how is a made-for-PC chipset different from one for a phone? Not much, really. Since the Snapdragon 850 is meant to be used in devices bigger than a smartphone (like laptops and convertibles), it can run at higher clock speeds without overheating. The extra space in larger chasses allows for better dissipation. Thanks to the faster 2.96GHz clock speed (among other tweaks), the Snapdragon 850 is about 30 percent faster than the 835.Source: Engadget

We have just posted our evaluation of the True-Fi software from Sonarworks. This is a pretty amazing piece of software that lets you setup your headphones to be true reference headphones. If your hardware is on the list, you'll have a great experience and have a music experience that is equal across all platforms. Take a look and see what True-Fi has to offer.

As much as I'd like to encourage everyone to run out and buy True-Fi from Sonarworks, it's not for everyone. If you are happy listening to bass-heavy music and don't really care about good quality sound, you might want to pass. If you care about audio quality and are willing to browse the list to see if your headphones are supported (list is growing all the time), you may want to give it a shot.

Sega has been drooling over Nintendo's success with the NES Classic and SNES Classic, so they too are joining the classic bandwagon with their Sega MegaDrive Mini. This is a mini Gensis console that promises a lot, but I won't get my hopes up until it's actually on the shelves. The Genesis was probably my favorite 16-bit console back in the day.

   First, there was the NES Classic. Then the SNES Classic. And now, the Sega Genesis is making a miniature comeback too. Behold, the Sega MegaDrive Mini, just announced in Japan to commemorate the system's 30th anniversary. (MegaDrive was the original name for the Genesis, in case you didn't know.) Source: CNET

General Hardware / AMD Unveils Gen 2 Ryzen CPUs

AMD is getting their act together and is following up their first generation Ryzen CPU with it's successor. At this point we are all hoping for some Intel crushing performance, but I fear that the latest chips will only see minor performance improvements. I'd like to think that AMD is really back in the performance game, but the cynical side of me says they will just release a Ryzen 1.2 instead of a 2.0. Model numbers, specifications and more information at the link below. Pre-orders are available.

   At the more affordable end, there's the six-core Ryzen 5 2600, which will go for $199. It's clocked between 3.4Ghz and 3.9GHz, and it should be a solid competitor to Intel's similarly priced Core i5-8500. The new chips are built on AMD's 12 nanometer Zen+ architecture, so you can think of them as a slight upgrade over last year's models. Its true platform followup, Zen 2, is expected to debut next year.Source: Engadget

Google is working on a few things in their next major GMail release, and in addition to putting your calendar beside your emails, quick replies, snoozing and more, they are also rolling out a feature that makes email a little more secure. You will have the option to enter a passcode to open the email (sent by SMS) as well as have the ability to prevent forwarding, copying, download or printing these emails. This is a great step in the right direction for Google if they want to take on the enterprise.

   The features are very similar to some found in Microsoft’s full Outlook application, and Microsoft is also adding the ability to restrict emails on its Outlook.com service. These features will largely appeal to businesses that want more control over how emails are used by recipients, but they won’t stop people from taking a screenshot or a photo of an email.Source: TheVerge
