News / External USB2/1394 Enclosure review

I am currently working on a review of the ME320 USB2.0 and firewire (1394) drive enclosure.  This enclosure works with any optical drive, (CDROM, CDRW, DVDROM, or DVDRW) as well as with any 3.5" Harddrive.  It supports up to ATA133 and currently a 250GB harddrive.

I will be posting up the review, likely the first of next week.  It will be interesting to see first-hand which is faster: Firewire or USB2.0.  Stay tuned. . . it looks like an easy way to attach some extra storage, without a huge speed hit.

heh. yeah, I had all of the tables, buttons and jump menus done.  All I had to do was test and type.  I was testing on one rig, while typing the review on the other!

I'm not sure, but this may be the first full review of this drive on the net.  HardwareZone had a preview a couple of weeks ago, but they never tested any of the advanced drive features.

I was up past 1am the night I got the drive, and then up just after 5am the next morning. . .

It seems that everything is pretty much back to normal.  My site seems to be working fine, but if you are using Telus' DNS servers you may still be having problems.

These DNS issues currently seem to be only applicable to those using Telus' DNS.  If you need a new DNS in the meantime, try using Stanford Universities.  (They were posted on the web)

Primary: 171.64.7.55
Secondary: 171.64.7.77

They may be a few milliseconds slower (ping), but they work.

I may have a bit of downtime over at BensCustomCases.com on May 20-21.  If all goes well, it should only be for a couple of hours.  If all doesn't go well, it could be for a day or two.

The traffic has substantially slowed down.  I only had 900+ hits yesterday.  It was the exposure on http://www.tomshardware.com that was causing the spike.  Not that I'm complaining.  Yes Telus complained at the first of the year when I only had 1700+ hits in one week on my personal webspace.

In the last few days, I've had over 5500 hits, and over 1.2GB of transfer.  If that was just off of my personal webspace, Telus would probably have shut me down.  Being in the country on Dial-up, I can't have that happen.

It's defiantely all working out now though.

Due to the high volumes of traffic I was getting on my personal webspace with Telus, I had to move my site to a regular server.

Thanks to DallmannComputers for letting me set up on his webspace.  He is generously sharing some of his 100MB Webspace, and has nervously watched as I have used up 20% of his monthly 6GB bandwidth in just two days.

We're keeping our fingers crossed. . . :-/

We've been having a few issues here in the forum lately due to an attempted service pack upgrade.  There are a bunch of fixes in a new service pack, but apparently there are some bugs as well.

For now, we are back up and running on Dallmann's Server using S.L.A.G.D.'s (Nicao's) bandwidth, but are looking at a more permanent solution on Ben's Custom Cases webspace.

When that occurs, the transition should be smoother as well will get the new location up and running before transfering the data/traffic over.
