You need a good ping and no packet loss to VOIP.  Wild Rose Customers need not apply.

looked into vonage, but they have their fair share of fees and such too, also you have to pay a cancelation fee and installation fee, etc. etc

decided to go with the shaw digital phone instead, and I must say I'm impressed, the voip thing is definately a good thing

I have Vonage and have had it now for over 18 months. Works fine except when I saturate my DSL and then try to use the phone. So, don't download and talk at the same time or otherwise you'll need to look in to setting up QoS on your router.

It will be interesting to see how wildrose's voip works, seeing as they still have a hard time somedays getting the internet to work properly, lol

I use a GE Skype Phone, and if you have QoS set up in your router and ports forwarded so that it doesn't have to trigger the HTTP port, most of the time Skype (voip) quality is pretty good.  Some days though, it is completely unusable

I had Vonage on Shaw Cable.....dumped it after 6 months and moved to Shaw Digital. Very happy with the Shaw call quality but miss some of the cool Vonage features like seeing your call history online, E Mail voice mail and the portable part. The reason I dumped Vonage was that during the peak evening hours my phone was not usable....lots of dropped words, echo etc. Vonage is going downhill now....tons of lawsuits against them.

Apparently Shaw now offers a feature that will allow you to prioritize the packets that vonage uses so that during peak times it won't drop calls or degrade quality, but if you have to pay shaw extra so that you can use vonage you might as well just use Shaw's digital service anyways

I've had Shaw digital for well over 2 years now and have never had any issues, I've never had it go down or even sound funny even once, its a pretty good deal and its also pretty nice to know how much your phone bill is going to be every month no matter how many calls you make

I do have one question though about vonage, did you have to pay a cancellation fee when you dumped it? I read through their fine print at one time and noticed they have a ton of fees if you cancel, curious to see if they actually enforce them

No canceling fees but I was a very early user so they may have added that in after. They did suck up with lots of free offers trying to keep me....

Still cryptic on this vonage setup... so I wait. I accept been told that Wildrose Networks is traveling to accommodate a VOIP account to their customers, just in the testing allotment now. It will be absorbing to see how wildrose's voip works, seeing as they still accept a harder time somedays accepting the internet to plan properly, IP PBX

I was told that they were testing this VOIP deal since I started...(about 4 years ago) So I don't see this happening... They have to figure out how to get the bandwidth to the customers first before they figure out VOIP......  But I have received  a  call from WRI or Tera-byte whatever this company is called today in updating my "old" system see how this goes.

For Voip to work you need a very low ping.....Any other than that and you will drop packets (which translates into missed words in the conversation). Even when I was with Shaw cable high speed the ping was to high during the evening hours to let me make calls. I now use Magic Jack when traveling as it allows unlimited calls in north America for a net cost of $20 per year. For my home service I am still with Shaw but I dropped my package down to the lowest one ($21 per month) for unlimited local calls with 4 cents per minute LD as it fits my call pattern much better.
