System Resources
« on: March 05, 2003, 01:53:02 PM »
I just formatted the ole computer because every now and then my CPU resources would go all the way up to 100%, the mouse would freeze couldn't do anything.  Then the resources would drop for probably 2 seconds, then do the same thing again.  Even doing something just as simple as surfing the net.  After I formatted it still does it the odd time.  I am starting to wonder whats going on.  I installed all the latest drivers(Nforce 2, DirectX9, ATI catylst, SB Audigy)  Any of you guys ever run into this before.  Also it hasnt' done this the whole time I've had the motherboard either.

sys specs:
Athlon 2000+
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
512 pc3200 OCZ
ATI Radeon 9700 pro
WIN XP Pro /w SP1
2 maxtor hard drives 7200 rpm

I also don't think its anything to do with the ram, its brand new, and with my old stuff in b4 it did the same thing.  I'm getting a new CPU on Thursday so I'll see if it still does the same thing.  Who knows it could be the CPU.  Thankx.

It is possible that you could be running into some early Hard Drive Failure.  I just had one half of my RAID 0 set (7200 RPM Maxtor) die on me.

I would head on over to Maxtor and get their PowerMax program and run it on your drives.  It's not foolproof (some drives the utility says are fine actually aren't), but it will eliminate that possibility of hardware failure.

You can get more info, and download the utility by clicking here.

Do you know if you have any programs running in the background, like Kazaa (shudder) etc...   Check the list of processes in the task manager and see if there is any program that is taking an unusual amount of cpu time.    Also are you on high speed? and if so,  try unplugging from the internet an see if it still happens.  Most of the time this happens in my experience is a rogue program running in the background.   Maybe post a list of the processes from your task manager.

Life is a toilet.  As soon as you get caught up, someone flushes you again.

Yeah when I run the task manager, there is nothing abnormal about any other background services, and no, no Kazaa, or other file sharing stuff on there at all.  Sometimes its hard to really pinpoint cause I never know when it does it, could be days between, could be hours.  Next time it happens I'll post up a pic of the task manager,  oh and yes I am on high speed, Shaw

Here is the pic of my Task Manager while my computer is skitzin out.  I run RivaTuner to OC the vid card but, even before when I didn't have it, I ran into the same problem.  Thankx

I've had that happend before, but it was due to windows media player, if i would watch a divx or something like that, a little thing would pop up saying I was low on system resources, and then i would freeze for a couple seconds, and the unfreeze, and on and on and on, I just always restarted and it fixed it, but some patch came out and fixed that problem for me.

How often does it do this? Cause I would try Nicao's advice on unplugging the cable internet and see if that fixes it, but if its just something that happens every once and a while, unplugging the internet sorta sucks

My other suggestion, whether it will help, would be to run adaware and norton's windoctor, both of these are great programs to have anyways, and they might help

Probably at last resort I will unplug from the net for a while and see how it runs, as far as adware and Norton, I will give them a shot, never hurts.  Just seems weird after a fresh install it still does it, I haven't downloaded any new software off the net lately.  It all seemed to spawn from when i first installed Splinter Cell (which is a very buggy game BTW), after that I was getting this random lockup, but that was before I formatted again.  The only thing I didn't do was wipe out the partition when I did format, so I'm wondering if maybe somehow I got a virus that nested itself in the partiton.  I will fiddle with it some more and keep you guys posted on the situation.

It could be virus realted too, sounds sorta like a trojan horse virus, I'm not sure what everyone else would use for a trojan horse removal/checker tool, I'm really not sure what the best one out there is at the moment

Well I solved the problem!  It turns out I was downloading the latest Nforce drivers off Nvidia's website.  I decided to look at Asus's website and found they had a different version of the drivers, so I decided I would try them (after all I changed every piece of hardware in my computer except the mobo).  Sure enough haven't run into a problem yet, and everything runs great.
:D

Nice work!  Now aren't you glad you didn't listen to your little slogan?  "If at first you don't succeed. . .
