Apparently the rumors of Dell purchasing Alienware have come true. X-bit Labs has the news over here. Is this Dell's way of getting 'in' with AMD without being blunt about it?"Even though Dell has been offering its gaming personal computers (PCs) for quite a while now, given that they all were based on processors from Intel. . .

Get your gamer Alienware computer with onboard integrated Intel smoken graphics!

I've never understood the alienware craze, who wants to pay more because it looks all spacelike?

now if I could set my notebook to stun, then I'd pay more

Well, from what I understood, Alienware was spozed to be a big time vendor to supply gaming machines.  Even if Dell and HP had 'gaming' machines they could never hold up against a home brew system.  For example, I've seen a Dell 'gaming system' and they used a dual channel board but only used one stick of memory.  Alienware was supposed to build proper gaming machines with all the new, cool, up to date gear.  But now since Dell has aquired them I seem to remember a statement something along the lines of, "Now that Dell owns Alienware, they'll be able to sell the Alienware machines cheaper because they're now using Dell parts."  Which I assume was meant to say, "Dell can build them cheaper because they buy parts by the thousands."  But I think the reality of using "Dell parts" will be the use of generic hardware which takes away from the whole experience.

Dell will keep Alienware as a separate company, they know thier "Gaming" systems suck compared to all others, and I think they will keep Alienware as is, a high end gaming company using the latest and greatest parts, water and air cooling systems and notebooks, ditch the XPS series, and recomend Alienware.

I think this is a stab at Intel as well, being able to sell AMD processors under the Alienware name without loosing the backscratching from Intel on chip prices when "Dell" only sells Intel. "Dell" will continue to sell only Intel, but I bet we see even more, if not all, AMD based Alienware sysems from now on.
