If you've ever changed some of your personal options and selected some non-default stuff, the smilies may not show up for you.  I tried to reset everyone to these but I guess it didn't work.  To get them to show up, head to your "Profile -> Look & Layout Preferences -> Then choose Christmas Smilies as your default set.  That should do it.  If it doesn't, let me know and we'll troubleshoot.
