What happened to 64 bit Vista?
« on: January 25, 2007, 09:43:34 PM »
I got an email the other day from one of my suppliers telling me what versions of Windows Vista they will be having at the end of the month. One thing that struck me as odd is that they were not going to be having any 64 bit versions! Now why would you want to sell a 32 bit version that will be out of date in a year?

No one supports 64-bit operating systems yet.  This story at the Inquirer says that it won't really do any good in 2007 at all.  Driver support sucks in 64-bit Windows and the trend continues through Vista.  That is a major bummer as 4GB showed a greater performance when gaming than 32-bit Vista.

Quote
Vista 64 bit will continue to be their ultimate goal but unfortunately Vista 32 bit will remain the dominant one. Intel said that Vista 32 is fine as it will address 2.75 or 3.25GB from the 4GB memory you stick in a machine. Graphics drivers are the weakest link. This news will certanly make some memory vendors cry into their beers.

Lame.

Well, I can tell you right now that 32-bit and 64-bit versions will be on the same DVD. I'm still waiting for my copy of Ultimate to appear from Intel.

I didn't realize that.  Now I'm super interested.  Back when they shipped out the RC1 Samples it was 32-bit on one disk and 64-bit on the other.

On MSDN, they have both 64 & 32 bit versions. Yet when I grabbed mine, I leaned more towards the 32 bit version anyway. I was kind of hoping that Vista would help move the market more towards 64 bit computing. But it looks like it will be some time yet before that even happens.

I also believe that drivers will be provided on a supplemental disc, rather than being on the install DVD.
