V8 System
« on: February 21, 2008, 11:02:21 PM »
So I am thinking of building an Intel V8 system....Has anybody tried one out? I am thinking of using -
2 X Intel Quad-Core Xeon® Processor @ 3 Ghz
16 GB PC2-6400 DDR2 ECC FBDIMM CL5
Intel Server Board S5000PSL (SASR)

My concern is that this is pricey gear and when I look at the new Mac Pro system I get basicly the same gear as noted above except I get the case,DVD,HD,Video, keyboard and mouse for almost the same price (Mac Pro starts with 2 GB ram) as I would have to pay for just the CPUs and MB. In looking at the Mac Pro it seems like the deal of the year.
MacPro

What ever system I get will be running Windows only as I need the Windows apps. I am thinking of running the new Server 2008 with the desktop experience package on it just to let those CPU cores and Ram be fully used.

Crap, do you know how many systems I'm going to have to run to keep ahead of you in folding now?

Did you go with the macs?

I'm not sure if you've played with macs before, but if you need a hand installing windows just give me a shout. (macs dont use a bios, they use intels new EFI instead, so you will have to install through bootcamp then make sure windows is set as the default boot OS)

You are safe from these guys folding for me....They are going to be used on my internal network (not connected to the internet). I have installed XP through Boot Camp before and it went very smoothly. Now I am looking for some info on running Server 2003 or even Server 2008 under Boot Camp.

Edit: Yes I went with the Mac Pro machines....after looking at the price I could not build the same gear for anywhere close to the same money.

If you still use Home Server, you'll be screwed with a 64-bit OS on this machine. . . talk to Nicao about that.

I have dumped the Home Server due to the data corruption issues that this OS has been having and Microsoft has not offered any patches in the 3 months that this issue has been discovered. What is the point of the Home Server product if not to store your data securely.... :tickedoff:

I would like to try Server 2008 but I have not ready anything about being able to run Boot Camp with it.
