Custom built multi core computer
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:37:14 AM »
This is a very cool Linux project....

48 Core Computer

Some specs...

Some render tests result here:
The storming sea scene file 24 frames in resolution 4000x4000 pixels.

- On a MacPro 2 x DualCore Xenon 2.66 Ghz with 4 GB ram
took 552 minutes (9.2 h)

- Helmer did same 24 frames in 4k format in 64 min.

Some approximate numbers give Helmer a floating point capacity of 186 Gflops

Wow. That's some crazy stuff for only a home built system. I wonder how much the bill was for all of that.

It's an interesting idea, I looked into it quite some time ago to put all my spare parts together for a folding cluster, just never got around to doing it and at the time it looked like it was going to be a ton of work

With that many CPU's though, WU's couldn't take very long at all

It would certainly be worth it if you're looking to fold. If I had the money I would probably build one for folding. Within the next couple years quad core prices will drop even more so it shouldn't be too hard too find a good deal.

Folding would be just too sweet with 48 cores running at full speed.

There are a ton of PIV @ 3 Ghz being replaced in the business world now (3-4 year replacement cycle). Many companies will gladly give them away so that they don't have the hassle of disposing them. While your end product would not be as cool as a Quad Core setup....running 10 PIV with HyperThreading would still be a decent project and free is hard to beat.

I seem to remember back in the day people having a bit of issues with F@H on a cluster, but with the new Clients like the SMP client maybe things are easier now

I'd like to one day give it a try, guess I need to find a bunch of hardware, lol
