make a windows install see only 1 HDD
« on: June 01, 2008, 02:00:04 PM »

I have a windows rig I use mainly for gaming, but a little bit of design work as well. A friend of mine needs a box that he can use to run a small game server on while it is in the developmental stages for 4 or 5 hours a day, but needs full remote access to it (RDP). Since I'm either at work, or on my laptop more often than not lately, I wouldn't miss the bandwidth or cpu cycles, and want to donate my rig to him.

Heres my question. I want to partition off a 40GB disk for him, and have a fresh install of windows on there, but heres the key. Since I have clients work on my main drives, I don't want to give him access to all my files.

Is there a way to make a windows install only see the drive that it is mounted on, short of plugging in and unplugging drives when I want to get back to some of my other work files?

You can use the BIOS settings to turn off a drive but a better way to protect your data is to create a new non administrator account for your friend. Now select the folders that contain your data...set the access to only your user account. You could also use the Windows EFS to protect your data even further.

I found another friend that donated a x2 3800+ with 2 GB of ram to the cause, so i'm just going to let that run in the furnace room for a few months until he is done with it.

thanks for the input

Sharing a system is always dangerous - even with restricted accounts.  A person can accidentally spill coffee, kick the tower or throw it out the window.  If he has a separate system, you'll be much happier and not have to worry about your data.

well he's in indiana, so if he spills coffee on my box or leaves a footprint in the side of the case I'd be extremely impressed :D
