Craigslist - Kijiji
« on: December 01, 2010, 04:55:52 PM »
Ok, not sure how many of you guys out there use these services where you live, but I kinda wanted to see how many people actually have consistent good experiences with the Craigslist/Kijiji's of the world.

I've always been more of an ebay fan, however as of late I've tried using Kijiji in particular when looking for items that I don't really want to pay full retail for.

Please feel free to post your experiences using these services in the forum below

Sold a truck, filled a rental spot, and bought a mitre saw for $20 all on Kijiji in the last year.
Never tried Craigslist.
I don't think I've sold anything on ebay yet (man I thought those screen shots of Fujitsu owning Nicao in UT would have sold by now.)

I guess to clarify why I'm asking, as of right now I've never successfully purchased anything from Kijiji (or Craigslist), but I have tried.

My latest attempt was to buy a new Monitor, which has so far been a 10 day "e-mail back and forth".

I'll try to recap my experience:

1 - I ask about the monitor, guy responds, everything seems cool, guy says it has warranty and everything

2 - I ask if he has the receipt, he responds the next day saying it is actually from his company and he doesn't have the receipt but not to worry because it still has warranty

3 - I ask for the serial number so I can confirm its still covered (not sure if people normally do that, but whatever, its a somewhat expensive monitor so I need to be sure).

4 - Guy comes back and says the warranty is non-transferable (I am unsure if that is true, regardless, I am willing to take the risk).

5 - Since there is no warranty I ask for a price reduction (he initially said there was still 2.5 years of warranty), now that it no longer has warranty I would expect a bit of a price drop.

6 - After a couple back and forth emails we settle on a price that was less than his original asking price (we are now 8 days into our "transaction")

7 - We agree to meet on Wednesday, I provide my phone number and he says he will call me after work and we can meet up to exchange money for the monitor (I also want to see it in action to ensure I'm not getting a dud monitor)

8 - Guy emails back and says lets just meet at the train station, I respond asking how that will work seeing as I need to make sure it actually works.

9 - Guy emails back once again and says that it won't be a problem, we can hook the monitor up at the train station and he'll show me that it works (please not that this is a big monitor).

10 - I respond and ask how he is going to show me that it is capable of accepting a signal if we are at a train station. He responds and tells me to bring a laptop and we can test it there (yah, red flags of course are popping up now, I'm going to bring cash and my laptop to a train station? haha).

11 - I respond that I'm not comfortable with that for obvious reasons, he responds back with "I do this for both of our protection" (unsure how this protects me....)

12 - I respond and ask why if he's selling this monitor for his "company" why I can't just pick it up there, he doesn't really respond and in the end he says he can stop by my office and drop it off instead.

13 - So now I wait at our pre-determined meeting spot, no call, no return email, no nothing, I'm pretty sure I've been stood up (and after all this crap I was pretty much expecting this result). Probably for the best that this didn't work out as after all of this I was pretty sure I was going to get stabbed or something trying to save a few bucks on a monitor.

Thats about it so far, pretty sure I'm never getting this monitor (and I'm not too upset), just amazing how much of a gong show these services are and was wondering if others have had the same experiences or if I just have bad luck.

Please share your horrible stories to make me feel better

Those screenshots are classics, Trust me

Hold onto them and they'll make you a tidy sum of money someday

I found a $700 Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye lens on Kijiji for $600 - I offered the guy $450 and he took it.  Met him and left happy with the lens.

Awesome experience every time Fujitsu...  I don't know what is wrong with you...

I've sold a few old desktops on Kijiji, never had an issue, and bought my camera with lens (d50 with  Tamron 70-300) for $300 on craigslist Edmonton.

I think the trick to smooth transaction, for me at least, is getting the persons phone number from the start and talking to them instead of emailing to make sure there are no misunderstandings.

Fujitsu, I'd recommned not using your email address axmurderer@bcchordware.com
And maybe don't have the person drop off any items at your "Other" job. The fishnet stockings might scare them.   :o

I have to wear the fishnet stockings otherwise I'd look silly driving around my old rusted A-Team van......

I usually sell things off Kijiji and Craigslist rather than eBay.

Craigslist is a hit-and-miss for me. For one, people usually lowball me more often over there. I don't seem to get as much replies than at Kijiji either.

Kijiji is okay, but I've had 3-4 guys leave me in the cold by not coming to our rendez-vous (even after multiple confirmations).

Otherwise, I've sold 20+ computer parts without too much trouble. The trick is usually getting their phone number/cell number. If anything sounds fishy or too cumbersome for me (inconvenient rendez-vous time, spot, etc.), then I don't deal with them. It's not worth my time.

I personally don't buy anything off Kijiji/Craigslist unless it's something that I cannot buy online.

The phone communication seems to be the key, unfortunately in my last case the guy wouldn't give me his number (pretty much everything about his was sketchy).

In my other experiences with Kijiji in particular was people advertising their product but then trying to sell you on a "comparable" product. I was trying to buy some golf clubs off Kijiji and of the 20 ads I replied to about 5 were misrepresented, 10 never replied back and the other 5 were already sold

So basically I'm thinking I've got some sort of Kijiji curse which prevents me from completing a transaction successfully....
