Nice review, I found that I went and grabbed the firmware for this drive and it allowed for better compatability with cheaper media.  Other than that this sucker is awesome.  Nice and quiet too, can't even here the thing burn, close, open.  Good job on the review, it really does show off what this drive can do.  ;)

Thanks for the props man.  It is an awesome drive.  I will be keeping this one. . . at least until the Dual-Layer 16X drives become available.

Cool thing is that although this drive doesn't currently support 8X DVD-R burning, it will likely be available through a future firmware update.  Until then, support the DVD+R initiative!!

Strange stuff, I've never had a +R not work on any DVD player I've personally tried.  Pioneer, Toshiba, Apex, Norcent, and even a 3 year old Zenith - all worked fine.

I've got a 2 year old Toshiba that will play them, but it has a hard time reading burnt discs lately (whether it be a -R or a +R).  And a Samsung that is about a year old and it won't even touch a +R.  Even if I burn it in that UDF compatability mode.

I've talked to a few people who have Samsung DVD players (all less than a year old) and none of them have any luck with burnt DVDs.  I guess the moral of the story is that if you're likely to want to play burnt DVDs, don't buy a Samsung set-top DVD player.

Yeah sometimes I hate DVD players...

My Toshiba was playing everything just fine, then in the last couple months it won't playback any of the -R movies that I have burnt in the last couple months (It still plays the older ones I've done)  But the Samsung will play back the newest ones I've done just not +R discs.  Thats why I wanna move my home theatre system downstairs onto my computer, then I can use the DVD player in the computer to play back and it won't give a fuss.

These drives tend to read different media in a variety of ways, that's why I wanted to show how it reads all different type of discs.  That way you won't be surprised to see how slow the drive is with speedread disabled. (2x on all DVD Video).

I will be giving this drive away when Plextor sends me a 12x or 16x Dual-Layer burner.  So, probably not for a while.
