linux 8.0 redhat

So im thinking about putting red hat on my comp dual boot and was told to not put a boot loader on just make a disk when you want to use linux is there any reason why this was said (learning here ) or any pages that could be some good reading and is this a good idea with windows xp any help thanks

That's an option seeker.  Personally though I have never had any problems dual booting windows with the grub or lilo bootloader.    Just as long as you install linux after windows and make sure to install it on its own partition, also linux needs a dedicated partition for swap space as well.   The move to redhat 8.0 is a good one, it rocks.   Any more questions, just ask.

there is a way I believe to dual-boot without haveing two partitions, but i have seen first hand that that doesn't work very well (works for a bit then both OS's go)

The only reason I would caution about the boot loader issue, if because of uninstalling issues.  If you ever decide to uninstall RedHat 8.0, just make sure you read some documentation at LinuxNewbie.  If you need any help with anything, definately post your thoughts here, start new threads, and in my experience, Nicao's the man to answer.

yah i too ditched linux for the time being, I needed my server running for internet sharing and etc. stuff, and i just don't have the time right now to be learning how to do it in linux, when i know how to do it right now in windows

You know if either of you need some help setting up a linux box, I'd be more than happy to get you started.   If a dumb kook like me can do it, almost anyone can do it.   Trust me the benefts of a good linux system are endless.  I have tried both worlds extensively and I wouldn't go back to Windows on a server for the world.  And with world class tools like webmin and easy distros like Redhat 8.0 its not an environment exclusive to geeks anymore.

Been working all day on something I wanted to do for a long time. . . . installing linux in raid with the the embedded Highpoint controller on my Abit motherboard. Of course, throught the years it was something that never worked. Linux couldn't read the partition tables, no matter what distributions or revision.

Times have changed! With the latest Abit bios and 3.01 Highpoint bios, from Sudhian Media, on my Abit AT7 Max, and the latest drivers for the 374 chipset for Red Hat 8, it worked! Finally! The only problem I have is Red Hat doesn't see the harddrives as mounted, yet obviously its in there. The install saw it all, but did I lose it in the reboot? Maybe i need the 3.02 highpoint bios.

So, I have a dual windows XP and Red Hat 8 boot in hardware! Maybe Red Hat 9 will be even better.

Partition Magic 8 in windows is confused by it all after the install too.
