Raid in Linux
« on: January 20, 2003, 04:17:24 PM »
okay, so if you want to set up software raid in linux, do both the drives have to be exactly the same??

or, are you able to use two different drives??

because i have a 2.5gig Bigfoot drive, and a 2.1gig fujitsu drive kicking around, and i was wondering if i could throw them together for a linux raid set (like do somthing like partition the 2.5gig into a 2.1gig partition, and then raid it together with the 2.1gig fujitsu drive i have)

So is this possible, or should i just break down and buy a real harddrive?

The linux documentation says "Use two similar drives."  It doesn't say they have to be exact.  I was able to snag a matching pair, but it probably doesn't have to be.  As long as it's not an ATA133 80GB matched up with a PIO2 1.1 GB.

Anyone any other thoughts?

Use either Webmin, or boot from the Linux CD, either install Linux, or if it's already installed, do an upgrade.  When it comes to your partitioning setup, that is where you can setuo your raid.

No the best way to setup raid is when you are doing a fresh install.  When you get to the place where you partition your harddrive you have the option of raiding 2 or more partitions.  Its not a hard thing to do as redhat's partition gui is pretty easy to use.

Life is a toilet.  As soon as you get caught up, someone flushes you again.
