ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Dead: Get A7N8X-E Deluxe or ABIT NF7-S??
« on: June 06, 2004, 06:59:11 PM »
My A7N8X Deluxe just borked on me. I use firewire and a RAID 0 SATA Array as well as two optical drives, and two IDE hard drives.

My question is, am I going to be able to plug and play the RAID array as well as the OS? I will eventually do a reinstall, but I need to get my system up and running to backup my data.

Both the ASUS board and the NF7-S have similar features, and use the same IDE and SATA controllers, so it should be possible. Anyone confirm this? I could get a A7N8X-E Deluxe, but I'd really like to go ABIT.

Or would the AN7 be a better solution?

Please RSVP as I'm going shopping tomorrow.

BTW, there probably won't be news tomorrow as I'm without a rig.

I'm not 100% on this, but if you wanted to maintain data integrity, I'd go with the Asus as it probably uses the same controller.  Between the Abit NF7-S and the AN7; I've seen the NF7-S in action and it does quite well although I am not a fan of Abit.  However I've never seen or used the AN7 so I cannot vouch for it.  Best of luck to you.   What happened anyway to your board?

I hosed it.  I'd been doing a little "wire trick" mod to unlock the high multipliers on a Mobile Athlon, and though I'd make it easier and more permanent.  I added a switch.  It worked until it didn't.

I know both boards use the nVidia IDE controller, and the same SATA controller.  In theory it should work just fine, but I wanted your input.

I'd worry about different bios's and drivers as well, despite the same controllers.

I'm back up and running tonight with the NF7-S Rev.2.  It has way more options than my previous BIOS, and offers lower as well as higher multipliers and vCore voltages.  Although it doesn't natively support the Mobile CPU's, I can run them at their native voltage instead of "over-volting" it.

BTW, the switch from ASUS A7N8X Deluxe under WinXP was flawless, but under Win2K, I had to go to the recovery console and "FIXBOOT" (Thanks Nicao).  My RAID and everything is working fine, but when I have a chance soon, I will do a fresh install.  In the meantime, I'm running the Mobile 2500+ and default speeds and 22°C 100% load.

Congrats on the smooth change.  Always good to see the RAID array make it in the switch.  I think you'll like the Abit, it is pretty good for OC'n thats for sure and should take that 2500+ M for a good run especially with yur WC setup.

I've heard that ASUS, and MSI are getting sued for bad caps, and over the last few months ABIT has switched almost entirely to rubicon caps (supposed to be better).  We'll see.

I'm really quite impressed with this board so far.  It seems fast and stable, but time is the true test for a mobo. . .
