triple boot...xp pro, solaris 10, slackware 10.1
« on: August 12, 2005, 05:50:58 AM »
As soon as I get a new drive for my second pc I'm going to install xp, solaris, and slackware on it. Does anyone have any experience in doing this? I once had xp, 2k and slackware on it and it was relatively easy to setup but I'm unsure about the solaris part.

What order should I install in? Probably xp first...then what?
How should I partition the disk? I can't remember if I needed an extra swap partition for slackware and I believe I need a boot partition for solaris plus I'll need a FAT partition to share files between os's.
Also, what boot manager would be best to use?

Tough one.  I'd definitely install XP first, then solaris, then slackware.  I've generally found that most linux os's come with grub or lilo which would be most friendly as a multi os bootloader.  If slackware is like all the other linux os's I've used then yes you will need an extra swap partition as well as a boot partition for grub.   Therefore I would partition your drive with .  I havn't used solaris so I'm not too sure what partitions it would require.  Best of luck with your project.

I know slack comes with lilo because that's what I used before. Not sure if I'll stick with that or go with something I've never used before like grub. I need to do some more research because I'm still not sure about the partitions. My current solaris install needs 2 partitions, 1 for the os and a small 10mb or so x86 boot partition, so I'll assume I don't need that small partition since I'll be using lilo or grub. Still not sure but I think I'm looking at...

boot partition
xp partition
linux partition
linux swap partition
solaris partition
fat partition for sharing

The partition list looks good but I can't say for sure it will work. What size of Hard drive are you planning to use with this setup? To have so many partions you may need at least 120gb I wouls assume.

yep I'll probably get a 160GB drive when I can find a good deal on one. 40 for xp, 40 for linux, 40 for solaris, and split remaining 40 for the rest.
