Perpetual Dead Hardware Thread
« on: July 20, 2004, 01:07:54 PM »
I thought I'd start a thread regarding all of the dead hardware that we've been going through.  It seems that a lot of gear has been dying lately, and it's not all mine.

Here is what's died on me the last two weeks.

1. Bios Savior.  I ordered it from FrozenCPU and it worked once.  It refused to flash after that.
2. 120GB Western Digital IDE Harddrive.

My computer had been acting weird, so I checked my Event Log.  It said "Bad Sectors" I promptly tried to ghost it to a new drive, but it was so full of errors that it wouldn't even "Force" ghost.  The drive kept getting hotter and hotter the longer it tried.  Finally, it got so hot that I could barely touch it and on a whim, I tried again.  It worked!!  The drive is now dead however. . . I got my data just in the nick of time.

Post your toasted hardware here.  If it catches fire and you get pics, you'll get a bump in your post count.  So fry away!

Here's another one. . . my XBOX.

You can't really blame this on me, or anyone for that matter. . . It's an XBOX, and they don't seem to last.  I'm pleased that it wasn't even in my possession when it cratered.

I've recently had a Western Digital 120GB IDE Hard Drive bit the dust.  I replaced it with a Samsung 120GB 7200rpm 8MB cache drive, and I tell you what, it's a lot quieter than WD's drives.

I blew up a stick of my Crucial Ballistix PC4000 memory in the test rig.  All of a sudden the system went horribly flaky and wouldn't boot.  As it turned out I corrupted a couple of installs of Windows and had to reinstall everything.  Good news is Crucial is sending out new RAM and a postage paid RMA box.

My X800 Pro kicked the bucket yesterday, when I boot the PC, all I get is random white lines all over the place. Thought it was cooling, but everything is snug as a bug, fans work and all. So now I get to send it to ATI for warranty repair. Luckily I had an extra 9600 Pro lying around that will suffice for now.

Well I now have a dead HIS Excalibur X800 Pro.  I sat down at 6:30 tonight to do one more test before I finish writing and uploading my article on TEC cooling.  The plan was to share the load of the system between two power supplies by putting my two raptors and the X800 on the secondary power supply.  After swapping molex connectors the system refused to boot saying the card was not plugged in.  So....back to the old configuration of running everything on one power supply.  Stlil nothing.  I managed to get my SFF box up and running.  I tried it in that system too and still no go.  So I've declared it...DEAD!  But I don't want to upgrade my whole system to accomodate a new pcie graphics card.  So until then, I'll try and find an ol cheapy agp piece of crap to shove in there so I can retrieve my files.  Maybe after a few pay checks and I can get some new gear.

Seagate 80GB S-ATA 7200.7 died on me. It was starting to suffer from head failure as it would spin down, click, and then spin up again. It served me well for 3 years before blowing the gasket.  :P

In addition to the hard drive going out, my network card in my linux firewall failed as well, so I was without internet for a while and spent a good couple hours trying to troubleshoot where the issue was. Then having to find the right network cables to run it into my linksys router to get back online.

Now to try and find the time to fix the main router.  :(

Well I got home from work (September 21st) and decided that I would give STALKER a try.  Downloaded it from STEAM and started attempting to play.  The game would hard lock my computer.  I solved this by disabling EAX.  Once I was able to play, within minutes (around 5 or so) I would get colored lines radiating through the screen.  The game wouldn't lock up, but the graphic corruption got worse.  I checked my temps on my X1900XTX and they didn't seem too out of line (70 C).  I tried a few other games,  but they didn't exhibit the problem, but they didn't heat up the card as much either.  I tried cranking up the fan speed to see if I could keep the card cooler, and thus associate the problem with heat, but it didn't seem to lower the heat enough.  I cleaned out the HSF thoroughly without success.  I then tried seeing if ATI Tray Tools would show the same thing.  I ran the 3D view while scanning for artifacts and within a few minutes, I started to get them (artifacts).  At this point I knew the card was screwed (memory most likely), so I checked my warranty.  ATI's warranty is only good for 1 year (BS) and I knew I was close.  I checked my receipt from Memory Express and I had purchased it September 7th and it was September 21st that I discovered this.  Then I noticed that I had got the IRP from Memory Express for 2 years.  To make a long story short, I got a replacement, a HD2900XT.  I would have rather gotten an 8800GTS 640MB (it would have been cheaper for Memory Express too), but I didn't get any input on that decision.  So I got a better card out of the deal, with DX10 (I don't have Fista though) and the Orange Box free.  I finished HL2 E2 twice before I left for work (Oct 14th).

Thinking about freezing it with dry ice and fireing it out of a sling shot  >:D

I just got back from a bit of a break down in Montana and found that my Netgear WNR854T Router is a brick.  It was the only thing not plugged into a UPS - not sure if that's related, but it still sucks.  No internet in the house now . . . only the shop.

I guess I've been pretty luck. I've never really had any of my electronics break down on me. The only thing close was a XFX 680 SLI LT Motherboard that I ordered arrived DOA.
