Cant Decide if I want more RAM.
« on: December 19, 2003, 12:31:37 PM »
I am currently using Corsair XMS  (Twin Pack) 512MB DDR PC-2700 2-2-2-5 T, I am thinking about getting a Corsair XMS 512MB DDR PC-2700 2-2-2-5 T, to add to it.  I do use photoshop and other editing programs.  I also game way way way to much I see some of you have a GB did it make differents for you or is it really not worth going to a GB.

I am also considering a new Harddrive cooler and new power supply any thoughts on those would be helpful to.

Cooler Master COOLDRIVE 4 looks nice.

Theremaltake has nice looks supply but would consider other as long as price is under $80.  I am also considering a Antec 430W "TRUE430" -RETAIL $71, I like the brand none have failed me I just want a little more power for future addons.

Thanks all.

Umm, you don't really see a big difference when going to a gig, but I can definitely see that its there.  Some games such as Simcity 4, you'll notice some real differences when you get  a nice big city going.  Plus when doing you photoshop stuff, you should notice a difference with rendering times as well.  512 is good, but 1 gb is nice.  If ya got the money, I say do it.

Also the PSU for $71 seems to be a good buy.  Antec does make nice PSUs.

Antec True430 is a thumbs up.
1GB of RAM is nice (you can disable swap file on WinXP) thumps up.
What kind of drives are you running?  If your running some hot SATA or RAID, HD cooling is nice.  I've got a 3.5" Bay mounted 80mm fan running at 7v cooling my 2x120GB JD Raid 0 array.  It's a so-so investment.

I noticed about a 50% shorter load time for 1942 when I went from 512 to a gig of ram....

WOW,  That would rock considering how much I play that game.

lol, kinda ironic because I'm going from a GB down to 512 for my main rig.  I ordered up some PC4000, but I could only afford 512 of it after selling my GB.  Oh well, I'm hoping the extra bandwidth I can get will hopefully close the performance gap a bit.

Yeah I figured I wont have the money for while to get a 64 FX so going to a gig will just have to be enough for least another year.  I will be wanting new ram for that system anyways so figured it wouldnt matter to much.

Yeah, adding a gig will definitely boost performance it would be the first thing I’d add to that system. “Size does matter.”
