These days everybody needs a CD/DVD burner, they are the cheapest and easiest way of backing up information, or sharing it with others. If you computer didn't come with a CD/DVD burner and you want an easy way to add one, then you've probably looked at an External drive like the one I'm reviewing today. There are a lot of different companies that make external drives, so it will be interesting to see how one made by Plextor matches up.
The top-speeds of burners also seem to have hit the roof. It wasn't long ago when you were drooling over the new 8x DVD burner, only to have a 12x come out a month later. Those days are past, and it seems like 16x is pretty much the standard speed.
Basically my objective with this review isn't so much to go terribly in-depth with this drive, because we've all seen a million DVD/CD burner reviews, and nowadays the performance between all these drives are very similar. I'm basically going to try and answer three different questions:
- Why should or shouldn't I buy this drive?
- What features does this drive have that I can't get with other drives?
- How fast can I burn a CD/DVD with this drive?
First Impressions
CD/DVD burners just don't have that "WOW" factor anymore, so my first impression of this drive was pretty much the same as most others I've seen in the past 6 months. This drive looks pretty much the same as most external drives, its black in color and has a nice blue light to tell you when its turned on. Other than that there really isn't unique with its appearance. A nice feature is that this drive is both USB and Firewire compatible, a switch on the back lets you switch back and forth between the two interfaces.
