Today we've got the Silicon Power Diamond D10 USB 3.0 portable hard drive on the BCCHardware review bench.

Before we get started let me tell you a little more about Silicon Power. Silicon Power was founded in 2003 and has quickly started to make quite a name for themselves. In 2009 they were ranked #11 among Taiwan's Top 1000 manufacturers and were even ranked #1 in Taiwan's semiconductor industry. You might not be familiar with the name of Silicon Power yet but if the last few years are any indication you might be hearing (and seeing) their name much more frequently.

Now let's get back to the Diamond D10 USB 3.0 portable hard drive. The Diamond D10 line from Silicon Power features hard drives in 500GB, 640GB, 750GB, and 1TB capacities. We're going to be taking a look at the 750GB version and ours has come in a stylish blue finish (the Diamond D10 line is also available in Pink).

First Impressions:

Like with any USB hard drive there isn't really much to see so this section is going to be nice and brief. Just like every other portable USB drive the Diamond D10 is a rectangular enclosure with a hard drive inside, pretty basic stuff.

The first thing you are going to notice on the Diamond D10 is the nice blue finish (also available in pink). This finish is a nice change from the tradition black enclosures that pretty much every company offers.

The Diamond D10 only needs one cable to operate as it draws power and data both through the USB port. This is obviously a pretty nice feature as no one really wants to carry around a power brick with them like other 3.5" portable hard drives require. Thanks to the lower power used by the 2.5" hard drive contained inside the Diamond D10 they are able to power it fully off the USB power.

In the past you used to have to choose between the lower capacity, and more portable, 2.5" enclosures, or the higher capacity, and less portable thanks to the external power supply, 3.5" enclosures. Now with enclosures like the 750GB (or 1TB) Diamond D10 you can get both capacity and portability.

Now this wouldn't be BCCHardware if we didn't open up this device and see what's inside. As you can see in the next set of pictures the Diamond D10 contains a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue hard drive. This is obviously a standard 2.5" hard drive.

So there we go, as I promised earlier, a very brief look at the Diamond D10 USB 3.0 enclosure from Silicon Power. We'll move into the next sections and see if this drive can perform or if it's all show and no go.
