Performance Recap and Conclusion

Performance Overview:

In this last chart we've graphed all the real-world tests in a single column which shows how this break down on a larger more relative scale.  As you can see below, the WD Single drive performs consistently slower, but is still a decent performer.  As for RAID 1 or Single drive, the results are so close that there is really no noticable difference overall.  If you need redundant storage, RAID 1 should server you well without a performance hit on a NF4 system.  RAID 0, although not twice as fast, does offer a performance boost in every test, but some more than others.

Conclusion:

I've never used Hitachi drives before, and it's good to see they have overcome the ugly reputation that went with IBM's DeathStar Hard Drives.  The Hitachi Deskstar 7K250 drives are excellent performers and offer this performance with silence that I haven't experienced before with a Hard Drive.  You can barely hear the seeking or spindle noise above any case, CPU, or GPU fan in your system.  Straight up, these drives run away from a Western Digital drive with the same rated size and speed.  One more interesting thing to note is that a Hitachi 120GB drive is slightly larger than a Western Digital 120GB drive.  The formatted capacity is about 3GB larger on the Hitachi drive.

Honestly, I never expected Hitachi drives to pull ahead of Western Digital drives.  I'd always grabbed WD drives because they were cheap, had good warranty, and were top-end drives.  I'd think twice from now on for sure.

Let's break the Hitachi 7K250 120GB HDS722512VLAT80 drives down into some Pros and Cons.

Pros:

  • Excellent Performance in Single or RAID configurations.
  • Excellent Packaging.
  • Very Quiet Drive.

Cons:

  • None that I can think of.

Here's how it breaks down.

I can easily recommend this product and award it our Uber Pic award as it smokes the Western Digital comparison drive.

I'd like to thank Hitachi for firing these drives over for a review and our test rig.  If you have any questions, comments, or general feedback, please leave it at the "Comments" link below.
