It wasn't that long ago when Samsung first contacted me about reviewing some of their products.  I've been fortunate enough to take a look at some great LCD's, a printer, and a very slick digital audio player.  To round out the list, they've recently sent me their new SCX-5315F Multi-Function Scanner/Copier/Fax/Printer Machine.  This thing is larger than the average TV, and boasts more features than a busload of politicians, so lets carry on and see how it performs.

Specs & Features:

This is not a little machine.  This unit is geared toward the busy small office/home office market.  It's not large enough to handle the demands of a large office, but it's overkill for simple personal use.

Here are some of the highlighted specs from Samsung:

"The Samsung SCX-5315F, the ultimate digital copier MFP (copier/printer/scanner/fax). Featuring 33.6 Kbps modem speed, 3-second transmission speed, 550-sheet input, 250-sheet output, 72 hour battery backup, 8 MB memory, 600 x 600 dpi color scanner, 8-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit-depth, 16 ppm print speed, with duplexing 1200 dpi class print, parallel and USB interfaces and Windows compatible."

  • Functions: Digital Copier, Laser Printer, Fax, Color Scanner
  • Printing Speed: Up to 16 ppm
  • Resolution: 600 dpi (printing & scanning)
  • Interface: USB 1.1, IEEE-1284 Parallel
  • Input Capacity: 550 Sheets (Tray), 100 Sheets (Bypass)
  • Output Capacity: 250 Sheets
  • Toner: SCX-5312D6/XAA (7,500 pgs)
  • Compatible Operating Systems: Windows 95/98/NT4.0/2000/Me/XP
  • ID Card Copy: Ideal for insurance and medical offices. Copies the front and back of insurance cards and driver's licenses 2-up onto the front of a sheet of paper without having to re-feed the original.

So basically, this is a pretty loaded device that can do all you would ask for and more.  Alrighty then.

When this box arrived, it shocked our local computer guy.  The MFP arrived in a box bigger than a 19" monitor and weighs in at 61lbs.  Other than the actual unit pictured above, this is what else you get.

Pictured above is the toner cartridge, drum, power, phone and usb cables, as well as a couple of very well written manuals, and a software/driver CD.  Everything you need to get going.

Product Shots & Installation:

Here are some shots of the SCX-5315F.

The above picture shows the behemoth bared for all to see.  On the right is the cover that allows access to the fuser and area to clear some paper jams.  The front swinging door allows access to the toner and drum.  The bottom tray is a 550 sheet legal paper tray, and the top of couse allows access to the flatbed scanner.  There is an Automatic Document Feeder on the top of the scanner as well.

This next picture shows the control interface and the ADF.  For the most part the controls are fairly straightforward, and with a little playing most people should be able to figure out 90% of the functions of this machine without having to consult with the manual.  It's really that straightforward.

This last picture shows the I/O panel.  As you can see, it has lots of room for expansion such as wired and wireless network.  What it does have is a telephone jack for sending/receiving faxes, a Parallel printer port and a USB 1.1 port for printing and scanning.  There isn't a tonne of options here, but it does the trick.

Installation of the SCX-5315F was a snap.  I installed the drivers, rebooted as prompted, plugged it in was off.  Pretty much your standard fare as far as printer installation goes.

Keep on reading on the next page to take a look at the software, then later on to product testing.
