Android App Pick - Torque Pro

Application: Torque Pro

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines! This week we are getting down and dirty with an app for all of you that want to see exactly what is going on under the hood. This app requires a bit of extra hardware - in the way of an ELM 327 sensor that you plug into your vehicle. Once you've got it plugged in, you can fire up Torque Pro and get started. Torque Pro is an App that does more than read engine codes and let you reset the "Check Engine" light on your dash. Once you create a profile, and set up the profile for your vehicle, it will let you do a lot more.

Profile setup is pretty tedious as it asks you for details such as engine displacement, total vehicle weight, fuel type, capacity, max dial RPM and more. Once you have those values entered, the app will be able to calculate torque, horsepower and more.

What makes this app awesome is the different "Dashboards" that you can set up and tweak. You can have it display things such as acceleration, revolutions per minute, throttle, speed, turbo boost pressure, coolant temperature and so much more. It will also calculate and keep track of your 0-60mph, 0-100kmph, 1/4mile time, torque, horsepower and a ton more other options. In addition to all of that, Torque Pro can monitor mileage, as well as all of these other measurements and log them to a map so you can review all the details later from your trip. It's like having a high-end trip computer, diagnostic tool, and racing gauges all wrapped up in one handy interface.

There is a free version of the app that lets you do quite a bit of stuff, but if you want all the features, you’ll need to spring for ~$5 for all the functionality – in addition to the $15 ELM327 that you’ll also need. It’s not the cheapest app around, but if you’ve ever bought an OBDII code reader, or other diagnostic equipment for your vehicle, you’ll realize that the $20 price tag for all of this, sure beats the $300 price tag for a different tool – and this does a lot more.

Get ready, get set, Torque Pro!
