Android App Pick - SwiftKey Keyboard

Application: SwiftKey

Good day and Happy Canada Day/Independence Day for all of you North American nerds and geeks reading this week’s App Pick of the Week! We don't have anything overtly Canadian to share with you this time, and the Tim Horton’s App – although great, is pretty limited to us up here in the frozen north. This week’s App is certainly useful for everyone that types on their phone or tablet. If you’re a Tommy or Tina Texter, why not try out SwiftKey? It used to be a $5 app, but they’ve dropped the price to free and now charge for theme packs. SwiftKey is very handy and much quicker than the original keyboard that your phone came with. It also looks great!

SwiftKey is easy to install and use. The app will walk you through setup as it requires a couple of Android system changes to use the new keyboard globally. It comes with a few different keyboard themes to choose from, but if you want more, you can always purchase more themes from within the app. When SwiftKey when to the “freemium” model, they actually gave $5 credit toward theme packs if you’ve purchased the app previously. That is a nice touch.

By long pressing the 123 button (bottom left) you can change the keyboard layout and size of the keyboard.  It's cool for tablets that you can split the keys down the middle so it's easier to reach with your thumbs.  SwiftKey has predictive words as well and the more you use SwiftKey, the more it remembers words that you use in your conversations. In fact, I wrote this entire App Pick article on phone and it was quite fun swiping and typing with just my thumb!
