Testing and Final Thoughts

The only way to test in-ear headphones is to use them with everything I could find.  My HTC M8 is my primary device on which I listen to music, audio books and make phone calls. The in-line remote was very nice as I didn't need to reach into my pocket for volume control or to play and pause media.

Sennheiser claims that the CX 686G Sports are able to withstand sweat and water. I am not an avid sports person, but I do live on an acreage. I have a very big yard and vegetable garden to maintain. In the course of keeping things looking good, I do tend to get a bit warm and sweat while I'm very active. The CX 686G stood up to the task. As far as a full breakdown, I was impressed with the CX 686G Sport for three main reasons:

Yes, that is right. Every other in-ear headphone I have tried to use did not stay in my ears. No matter what it did (bent over weeding, hoeing the garden, mowing, weed whacking) or how much I sweated, the CX 686G Sports stayed in place.

After 20 minutes of use, most in-ear headphones hurt my ears, but that is not the case here.  Even after two hours of constant use, the CX 686G still sat comfortably in my ears. I think the hook at the top of the buds helped with pain and kept them comfortably and securely in my ears as well.

They are made by Sennheiser so I did expect them to sound pretty good. With the CX 686G Sports blocking most of the ambient noise, the listening experience was even better. Vocals, whether in Audio Books or music was clear and crisp. No matter how loud I played a wide variety of music, it was very clear and seemed to be well balanced. Bass was deep, mid-range was clean and the highs weren't harsh or overbearing.
Phone calls sounded just fine and the microphone picked up nicely and other people were able to hear me clearly as well. I can often have trouble hearing people clearly on a phone, but the CX 686G was wonderful.

As we wrap up this review, I will admit that I was surprised by the Sennheiser Sport CX 686G. I did not actually expect them to be something that I would like to wear on a daily basis. The look a little aggressive and the design looks like it could be a bit painful. I was wrong. They fit really well and I never had any issues getting them to stay in my ears.

While I knew the sound quality would be fantastic, I didn't expect it to be quite so clear from a small set of drivers. While the price tag of $69.99 MSRP may scare some people away, they are worth every penny and will outlast and outperform any cheap earbuds that you buy at your local big-box store. Once you have these, I doubt that any other product will do.

The headset is durable and the bright green color as well as the storage pouch will help you keep track of it. I know it may sound like I'm trying to sell this product for Sennheiser, but they are so good, they really sell themselves. I plan or picking up a pair myself once I send these back. They are that good.

I’d like to thank Sennheiser for sending over these for a review. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post them in the forum here.
