Introduction:

CaseBuy has been around for a few years, and hasn't really broken into the North American market . . . yet.  They have some pretty nifty products and have designed some nice cases.  One of the handy products that we've looked at a couple of different times before are their PSU testers.  The original EZ PSU Tester supported 20-pin PSUs and Floppy, Molex, & 4-pin connectors.  Things improved a bit in the way of connectivity with the EZ PSU Tester 2.  This unit supported 24 pin PSUs, SATA, 4/6/8 pin connectors as well as Floppy and standard Molex connectors.  The main drawback of both of these units is that the voltage tolerance was so wide, that unless you had a stone dead voltage rail, it tested OK with the PSU Tester.

CaseBuy has taken the criticism of the community to heart and now brings us the EZ PSU Tester 3.  This unit packs in an LCD that reads out the voltage of each of the rails.  That is a huge improvement over the previous version - if it's accurate.

Box Scuffed Up
Box Scuffed Up

The box arrived a bit scuffed up from the 4 day trip from Taiwan.  It was shipped inside of a case that we will be reviewing later on, so I imagine it took a tumble or two on the trip.  We pulled it out of the packaging and were happy to see that even though the box was scuffed, the product arrived unscratched and in working order.

There is not much inside the box other than the PSU Tester itself.  CaseBuy throws in a small instruction manual though and they give a bit more explanation of what this unit does.  It should be pretty obvious to most of you that a PSU tester tests Power Supplies.

Close Up:

We'll take a look at this unit up close and personal and see what functionality it offers.  It's remarkable that CaseBuy has managed to fit in virtually every single connector that exists on today's Power Supplies.  They cover everything that I can think of as you can see for yourself below.

Every connector that you will need for PSU testing is included on the EZ PSU Tester 3.  My only beef is with the SATA connector as it is not marked which way is up and the SATA power lead can be plugged in upside down.  This won't damage anything but it won't give you an indicator light either.  When plugged in properly it works fine.

Testing:

Previous EZ PSU Testers didn't give you any idea if the voltage rail was either low or high.  They only indicated that there was enough power to light up the LED.  This unit offers us much more.  It has an LCD display to show us what the voltage rails are actually putting out.  They claim accuracy +/- 0.1v.  That is one thing we will test for sure.

We tested this unit on the Zalman ZM460B-APS Power Supply.

In order to get the LCD to light up, you must plug in a 20 or 24 pin power supply.  You will also be required to plug in a 4-pin connector as well.  The 4-pin connector shows up as the +12v2 and the PSU tester will emit a beeping sound until it is plugged in.

As you can see in the screenshots above, the EZ PSU Tester 3 is accurate within the claimed +/- 0.1v.  I tested this unit on a few power supplies we have around here and the results are the same.  It is accurate with 0.1v.  This proves to be more accurate that MBM or other programs that monitor motherboard and PSU voltages.  I'm quite pleased with the result.

Conclusion:

The EZ PSU Tester 3 is everything we've been asking for in a simple plug and play PSU tester.  It is easy to use, has tons of connectivity, is easy to read and is accurate enough for normal use.  If you're a super enthusiast and demand voltage measurements within +/- 0.0001 volts, you probably won't settle for anything less than a $1000 Fluke ScopeMeter.  For everyone else, the EZ PSU Tester 3 is the answer to what we've been waiting for.  Nice work CaseBuy.
